Do YOUR Parents Preview and Restrict Certain Animes?

Talk about anything in here.

No. My parents trust me to make good desicions on what I buy, and if there is something questionable in it, they trust that I'm not reading it for that reason, which is good because I'm not. I could almost buy Love Hina in banres and Nobles, but I don't want to anyways.

Wow, Liz, its really cool to hear your view on it. ^_~ It makes me think of that TV in general sort of deems things as 'normal' in our minds that really shouldn't be. Like the show "Friends". Bleh.

You need to have a good firm hold on where your morals are before you go out into the secular world. Christians need to look at things alot differantly than the "general public".

Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

I would like to add my voice to those who are supporting the parents who do put limits on what thier kids are watching. Yes I remeber what a pain it can be (growing up in the 80's and never getting to see Freddy or Jason like everyone else I knew), but my wife has spent the last two years teaching in a middle school full of kids whose parents don't care about thier schooling, much less what the kids are watching and reading. You will appreciate it later, trust me.

I appreciate my parents setting boundaries for me because it's so much easier, and completely gets rid of that guilt factor that comes around from uncertainty. My parents, who are suprisingly naive about anime/manga (though they're sticklers on pretty much everything else) basically have to trust me for this sort of thing, So I just steer clear of anything above my age rating. Because my parents could come into my room and look through my stuff at any time, I think carefully about the stuff I watch/read. They generally give me a free rein, though, thankfully I've proven my maturity and trustworthiness to them.

About five years ago, my brother (12 at the time) talked my mom into renting Tenchi 2: The Movie. However, she watched it without him first. Needless to say, she took the movie straight back to the store.
That brother is 17 now and I have another 12 year brother. I've let 17 year old brother watch all of the anime that I have but I'm more restrictive towards the 12 year old. Being the oldest I know I must set an example. My mom has watched almost all the anime I have and she has usually enjoyed them so she trusts me. Her example of discernment in anime years ago has helped to shape what series I am willing to check out and what I'll let my brothers see (the 12 year old resents me for this, but he'll live :P ).

Thanks to my friend, who had a hentai pop-up, well, pop-up while his mom was around, she became over protective about it. Then she told my mom, and my mom wigged out and started browsing through my Manga. Of course, she picked out FLCL, and she was disgusted by it. Now she's uber wigged on w/e Manga I buy (more lax on the anime, but still) and she's always super cautious wether it's gonna have sexual or sensual content in it. If it's about boys and girls, she won't even let me read it. (sigh, I hate this problem.) I'm like, "MOM there's ratings on the backs of the comics+ I'm part of a christian anime forum that U can read christian reviews for this stuff, so chill, k?" It's tough. I try to never go shopping for anime or manga with her. My dad likes it though, and he doesn't care in the least bit wat Anime I buy, but briefly flips through any Manga I get. :shady:

My parents aren't really aware enough about anime to freak out about it, and now I'm out of the house so I don't really have to worry. Of course, my niece (older than me, by the way) has a hatred for the entire industry, regardless of the fact she's probably never seen anything outside of 5 seconds of Pokémon or some box in the video store. I am going to be spending thanksgiving at her house, with my parents there... She may try to turn my parents against it so they'll confront me when I have no means of escaping (yeah, she's like that...)

I got into it before it started coming up with my Mom... When there was discussion abot Pokémon, my mom got wary of that (I was into that as early as 95, as soon as I heard about it) but she said she mostly trusts me... She didn't like Sailormon and guilted me into throwing them away (I had a movie, tapes, and a small collection of Mixx manga... ) I tried to keep them from seeing any because of how quickly they react to things, but I finally gave in and decided to test the waters with "Grave of the Fireflies" I figured if there was anything I could try out on them, that was the safest one. My mom liked it, but my dad thought it was pointless... Sad movies are entirely lost on him. I also showed them the censored version of the theatrical cut of "Léon" which they had about the same reaction to, but the opening really bothered my mom. She was into stuff like "The Last Don" but the fact of a child being killed really bothered her... So, I try to be honest about my interests but also carefull at the same time... I'm old enough now they don't restrict me from viewing anything except for, of course, Harry Potter... My mom won't budge on that one when I'm living at home, and she guilts me if she finds out I've been watching or reading it when I'm not living at home. As far as teh anime goes, she's sorta wary, but she's told me not to worry about Lynn Ann.

I am pretty "liberal" when it comes to my media... I take an intelectual and artistic stance ona lot of things, but

1. Obey your parents (after they gave me the "no" on harry potter, even being 21, I stopped watching it at home)
2. Avoid areas you're weak... Your watching movies and TV shows can tap into all sorts of areas of weak faith. There is nothing sinful inherantly about watching these shows, but if it is a temptation that does bring sin, it's bad for you. Don't condemn those who's faith in that area is weaker, but don't condemn those who's faith in that area is stronger who have the freedom to watch those things either.

That is in the "don't do it" side

On the other side, These things are not entirely worthless... I'm sick of people saying that... TV is worthless, anime is worthless, games are worthless, art is worthless, music is worthless, or (what I'd be more likely to say) sports are worthless, You can derive much worth from media and entertainment. Relaxation, contemplation, restoration (such as cheering up), even conviction and change... That's a topic for another thread, though. There are lots of "good things" that are bad for other people because they were not meant to do them, becasue they were prohibited from doing them, or because it tempts them in their weak areas. All those things must be considered, and God and his word must be our first priority. When that is taken care of, the other things will fall into place over time. Anyhow... That's the end of my rant...

Above all the things I said except putting God first: Children (AKA all those living at home up to the age of 999) obey your parents, even if they exasperate you (meaning annoy you to the point of exaustion with nagging or arbitrary rule). Oh, and parents, don't exasperate your children, even if they don't obey you... It's not your responsibility that your parents are being fair, it is your responsibility to obey... And, oh, could someone get the plank out of my eye here... Yeah... I really shouldn't be talking... I have a bit of a problem with authority, but only the grating kind... Of course, I should take even more care to obey and be loving to the grating kind of authority...

Um.. Yeah... everythign I say recently comes back on my own head... Which is good.

If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you’re sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that’s almost never the case." - Chuck Close[/color]

Nope, I can't say that I have that problem.... My parents are watchful, but whenever they find something that they they think might be objectional, such as when my mother saw my "Art of Ceres: Celestial Legend" book, and saw some questionable drawings, she just asked me whether there was anything X-rated in it, and that was that. My parents told me that they don't go through all my belongings because they believe that they raised me properly, and trust my judgement, and that when I buy something, such as anime and/or manga, they know I'll choose wisely.

Wow! The same thing happened to me...I was watching it in my room and my mom came in to help put the sheets and such on my bed....anyway...he swore I looked at her....and she said nothing....Maybe she didn't hear it...

My dad tends to look through the manga's I wanna buy.....my mom doesn't...so I give them to her to hold if I have to go look at something outside the store....then she gives em to my dad...I come back in and see him and start praying there's nothing bad in it.....The last time that happened he was looking at Fruits Basket 3. *phew* I'm glad Aya wasn't in it....Basically for anime they don't ask....and I don't tell.....You see...I can stand multitudes of swearing.....my mom cannot and dislikes anything that has it in there....so...I tend to make sure if I know an episode of something has swearing in it....I won't let them know....*sweatdrop* yeah....I don't really have questionable anime....cept Tenchi the Movie 2: Daughter of Darkness. My parents pretty much trust my judgment. When i was first buying manga my mom would pick it out for me. Once in a while I'm tempted to buy something I now they wouldn’t like but then I think about what it would be like to lose their trust...That trust is really important to me.

Because I'm an adult, I'm responsible myself for what I watch and what I read. They can tell me their opinions, but it's my choice if I want to watch/read it or not. I'm responsible for whatever trash or whatever good goes into my mind. I have to work out my own salvation, so it's really between me and God. If God convicts me not to read or watch something, and I disobey the guidence of the Holy Spirit, than I have to deal with the consequences. In 1st Cor. 10:23, it says, " Everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible, but not everything is constructive."
I tend to use that verse when I'm trying to decide if something is really appropriate for me or not. Because I want to please God first and foremost. Everything else is unimportant.

They used to. :P
When I was a kid, I could hardly watch any anime because it was, according to Mom, demonic. No DBZ or Sailor Moon. Years later, she wouldn't let us watch Pokemon for the same reason, yet we started watching DBZ again anyway.

Then eventually, we didn't want to watch Pokemon or Sailor Moon, so it didn't really matter. When they first aired Yu Yu Hakusho, she didn't want us watching it. She wants nothing to do with demons, and honestly, I don't either to some degree.

I was worried for a while because I thought she wouldn't let us watch Kenshin, but when my dad started watching it, there was no stopping us and then she started to like it too. :P

I hate how my parents must check every anime and manga I read..It wouldn't bother me as much if they actually wanted to do it..I love my poppy but it took him about 2 months to approve of Cowboy Bebop....and thats when I kept asking him about it..then after that he says"Eric stop asking me the same question every day"

I want to say " Well the hurry the truck up!"after awhile I just stoped caring and watched whatever I wanted to pretty much...In fact the only way im able to play Final Fantasy was because my grandpa bought it for me when I was down in Texas..

The cool thing is I can buy any manga I wanted to and he never know whats in it. he says " if i see anything ese wrong with it your not gonna read/watch it"...Of course he never does....

It sucks even more cause Neither of my parents like anime and would do almost anything for me to stop liking it..which makes me wanna watch it more....It always seems the surpress anything I want to do as an person and just stamp me out as a "normal" person of society.

Ronin, they just care about you and want to protect you. I know right now it seems like they're supressing you or whatever, but you're really lucky to have parents that care that much. Some parents are apathetic. Just try to respect their wishes, and then when you're 18 (or out of their house -- whichever comes later), you can make responsible decisions on your own.

My parents don't really monitermy anime too much, because I am old enough to figure out if something is bad for myself. However if they did say that i couldn't I would respect their judgement and do as they say. they have the right to tell me what to do as parents, and as long as they are not telling me to do something that is bad, I am obligted to obey. I figure, thatif they say not to watch somthing it probibly isn't something I should be watching anyway.

I'm 16, so for the most part my parents are pretty much OK with whatever I watch. I've never had them bring up any questions about what I watch, even Princess Mononoke. (Although my father did make fun of Rurouni Kenshin--he was confused by how serious the story was, but how 'campy' the humor was.)
