My sis and I both took lessons in kenpo karate. We both made it to blue belt.

I take shotokan karate. Yeah. I'm a first purple belt, currently. I have an awesome instructor-well, I guess I could say two awesome instructors. My sensei and his wife =) He's a really friendly and approachable guy, but serious about the art. She's really good and serious, and knows how to give a good workout...but also really friendly :) I'm glad to have them as my instructors...but I'd also really like to learn more martial arts, like jiujitsu, or aikido, or as many different kinds as possible o.o/ Unfortunately, there are no classes for other styles in my area...

Believe it or not, there's a martial art out there that has its philosophy rooted in Russian Orthodox Christianity:

See its "Philosophy" section.

Sounds like my ex karate instructor. Guy had a huge ego and was a jerk. Can't believe I took classes with him for 2 years.

I'm not currently doing anything, but I'd like to. I took judo for 2 years back in the early 90s. Then I did goju kai karate for 2 years from 1999 - 2001. After that I kindof drifted from one thing to the other (wing chun, tai chi, kickboxing, tae kwon do) but never committed to anything.

Currently in the town I live in there's only shotokan karate and kenjutsu classes available, but I can't take either because of finances and I'm already practicing adult acting classes on the same nights those classes take place.

well it was first made for self defense for farmers and such against samurai. So it has some sword fighting, pressure points and ways to bacailly knock out the guy (which normally has a sword) and run.

I used to do Shotokan Karate (not shodokan, which isn't Karate but Aikido)

I'd love to get back into it. It was fun, but my parents couldn't afford it after a while.

I personally don't think so. I think it's a great thing to take up whenever. If you're 8 or 80. You can pick a martial art that curtails to how physical you are able to be at that point in your life. Goldenspines might know better than I do though. I think she's done several martial arts.

Roz is quite right.

Martial arts isn't like ballet (for example) where you have to start very young in order to be good (though it can be helpful as times, depending on the person). You can begin martial arts at any age and still excel. In fact, most of the time, instructors prefer older students to younger ones because they have longer attention spans. XD

When it comes to types of martial arts, they each vary quite a bit in how physical they are. For example, Tai Chi is mostly balance training and doesn't require much physical stamina, where Judo is very much strength and muscle training and very physical (you are constantly doing throws and sweeps). If you find a style that interests you, do some research on it and see what it emphasizes to see if you would like it. ^_^

But yes, it's never too late to start a martial art. I actually knew a few white belts back when I first started who were over 50 and they are excellent black belts now. ^_^

You can start martial arts at any age, but how good you'll be depends on what type you are learning and who you define 'good'.

Case in point, the Tai Chi mentioned above, which is typically about correct forms and not battered opponents. Aikido, the martial I practice, is fundamentally opposed to harming the opponent, so again beating someone to a pulp would not be a success.

The older gentleman in our group is a good example. He's shorter than me, stooped shoulder and stiff, but throws me around like I'm his own personal frisbee.

I have my black belt in Taekwondo and I am currently doing kickboxing. I also dabble a bit in archery and some sword fighting.

I don't do martial arts. But I'm a master marksman with any type of gun that you give me. I'm about a mid-level archer. I'm still working on it tho. And I'm working on my swordsman skillz. But I am adept swordfighting. Soon I hope to learn Jujitsu tho. ^^
