Conventions 2009

Talk about anything in here.

Postby Aletheia » Sun Feb 01, 2009 10:45 am

Otakon was my first convention, although I only went for one day, instead of all three, and it was awesome. I'm usually not a big fan of crowds, but that one day I went to Otakon was honestly one of the best days of my life. So in my opinion, it's a great first anime convention. ^_^

I'll probably dismiss most of my con plans this year, since travel and lodgings is pretty expensive for me at the moment. This means no Anime Expo or Otakon, though I'll likely check out the threads when they pop up like clockwork.

ComicCon is feasible since I have friends in the area, except that it's basically a glorified shopping district and I'm not sure I consume nearly enough merchandise to justify a ticket or traveling. Not to mention a particular brand of people that it attracts.

If you haven't done it and read the first bunch of members answers to answer your question.
But give it a try and hope you enjoy Otakon. There is Katsucon in a few days if you want to try sooner. Maybe attend it for a day.

I'm going to Katsucon next weekend (woot!), Animazement in May, hopefully Otakon, and MAYBE Anime USA.

I'll be at Acen in Chicago. Dunno about Wizard World, and maybe will try to be at Anime Crossroads in Indiana or AnimeIowa.

Other than the ones above does anyone have any recommendations on conventions in the midwest?

What I'm about to say is not meant to chase you away from volunteering. But keep in mind, that if you do and you want to meet the voice actors. You may not have any time to do so.

The best thing is to ask what you will do as a volunteer and well they let you have breaks, so that you can do what you want to do at the con.

You're absolutely, 100% correct Roy! Besides, something tragic just dawned on me--

I DON'T KNOW WHAT MY SCHEDULE IS GOING TO BE FOR MAY!!! We get every other weekend off (Work one, off one) and they haven't done the bidding for May yet, so I don't even know if I'm going to be off! It's a 50-50 chance.

That's awesome! I'm excited to know someone else is going. It'll be a lonely year this time cause my usual friends that go aren't this time.

Btw.. did you pre-register? If not do it quick before April 1st and pay the extra $1.50 for them to mail you the badge!!!

Last year I had to wait in line for close to 6 hours to get my badge because someone "hacked" the computer system and they didn't have a backup plan. Grrrr :stressed:

One thing I can say about volunteering is that most of those that do they may start as a gofer meaning go for this or go for that. They may be moving chairs or equipment. You may depending on the con be assigned times to be working during the con or sign up for when to work.
Volunteering may lead to be becoming as part of the regular con staff and asked to work each year.
I am part of the staff of Neko Con. I started as a medical person because of my training during my first attendance of Neko Con because they didn't have anyone as a medic.
I am now part of Attendee Management Services doing the samething and security. I work two shifts from opening to when the evening main event opens. Like 9 AM to 8 PM. They do want staff to take breaks for food and buildup strengh for the next thing that has to be done.

Bad news for anyone going or thinking of going to JAMPcon 2009 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. JAMPcon has been postponed until 2010 due to the state of the economy.

This was posted at their web site.

JAMPcon wrote:

Yeah, I'm afraid we're serious. In light of the economic collapse that has happened, we've decided it is best to postpone the convention. These months are a time for people to get themselves together and we feel like this will also give us a chance to bring an even better convention next year.

But don't fret, this is definitely not the end for JAMPcon! We've already got next year in the works so let me be clear that we are definitely having a 2nd year. No one expected things to take such a down-turn as they have for the USA. As a second year con, I have to think about the stability and survival of the convention so waiting a year will help this. I hope everyone looks back at this decision and realizes we made the right call.

There's only three anime conventions in Tennessee right now and we want to continue to be one of those. I truly hope to find people understanding, considering every one of us is feeling the punch in the gut the economy has gotten. But don't forget, we are simply post-poning! The convention is most certainly still on!! We've already booked the CCC again for the dates at the top and chosen rooms.

We do plan to have a couple events throughout the year to make the wait seem not as long and also will still be in the forums and having volunteer meetings. Please check out all the links to the left as the information is very important. Thank you to everyone who got involved this year. It is our promise that we will do our best to bring you the best convention we can in 2010!

Andrea Morgan
President of JAMPcon

It has been repoted the author of A Fans View website,Kevin Lillard, may have shut down the anime con section of his site.
From what has been reported was that Kevin may have had a depute with a con and prevented from taking pictures of cosplayers during part of the con.
His site was a great place to see cosplayers and contest at the cons.
Other report is that he retired from traveling to the cons across the country.
He was a few years ago attending a con in Ohio when he suffered a heart attack and was in the hospital for a week released to drive home to Indiana and suffered a relapse while walking around his neighborhood after he got home.
He had been attending a few cons but not many since up to now.

I went to Tekkoshocon here in Pittsburgh last weekend, and it was awesome... a big increase in people to about 3,250, which turned out to be just enough to save the convention for another year. We got Johnny Yong Bosch and Stephanie Sheh among others to come this year, it was great.
