James Earl. Obviously, I am Mark Hamill's father.

Seriously, though, James is a variation of Jacob, which is the Hebrew word for "supplanter." Figuratively, a liar. That ends up being true more than I want, but not nearly enough to be descriptive of me. As for Earl, it's originally from the Old English eorl, a warrior or nobleman. While it's interesting, considering my family was once Irish nobility in what is now County Cork, and I joined the Army to boot...the main significance for me is that it's my dad's and my grandfather's middle name as well.
To all, life thou givest, to both great and small.
In all life, thou livest, the true life of all.
We blossom and flourish as leaves on a tree
And wither and perish, but naught changeth thee.

So what are some of the surnames in your family tree?
It be funny if we ended up sharing some common ancestor along the way.

The one way to determine a name is to get a book with baby names.
It will give the spelling and definition of names that parents can give the child when they are born.
I sometimes wish I could find a book on names for different countries to find out what a person's name means in their language. I have a Japanese translation dictionary, also German and Latin but I am unsure if they help.

My friend Stewie said that she thinks everyone with ancestors from Ireland or Scotland are probably related in some distant way. I don't know how true that is, but if it were true that would be freakin' awesome. I could tell people I'm related to William Wallace!
