America's Funniest? Videos

Postby Golden_Griff » Sun Feb 06, 2005 5:37 pm

I was watching this on ABC just a few minutes ago and...it displeases me :shady:

Half of the videos that were aired I didn't find funny at all mainly because (a)small children were getting hurt (b)people were getting gashed open or given a near heart-attack, and (c)some of the videos were about stuff that was just disgusting.

I especially didn't like the videos where the small children were getting hurt or put in danger. What's funny about a baby being dragged around by a dog? Or a baby falling out of a chair, barely missing the ground because his mother reached out in time (not to mention that the baby was terrified and crying)?

And what about the lady that opened up that plate of spiders or whatever it was? What if that lady had a dog gone heart attack? It wouldn't be too funny then would it?

I remember when I watched America's Funniest Videos years ago, with Bob Sagat. Comparing the AFV of then with the AFV of today, it makes me think of how demoralized the nation has become.

Well, i agree some of the things that they put on their are not funny (such as baby almost falling out of chair) or disgusting (the "naughty file) and i have stopped watching the show as much because of that. However, some of the danger ones are kind of funny, not because they were in danger, but because they made really bad choices and learned a lesson by getting a little bit of a scare. For example my dad a few years ago decided to swing from a tree on a vine and never considered to test it to see if it would not break. Well, it broke, and at first, we all were worried but he came up laughing so we started laughing and he still laughs about it. Not that he almost got hurt, but that he did something like that without thinking. But overall yes i agree, they are not funny, and the few funny ones never win. i have not watched that show in months.

Yeah, I have to agree with you on this one. Some of them are genuinely funny, but most of them just make me wince. Then there was the one that was just a mean grandmother slapping the kid with the video camera. Not funny in my book.

Agreed. And, uh, I know this is decades old but welcome back Volt :)

Now, I'm not going to sit here and act like I have never bust my gut laughing at a dude flying on his bicycle and landing into the side of a building. Yes, there are some cases in which people get hurt and it's funny to me. I don't know but it's different somehow. Well, at least to me. But these videos are like what Volt said--they're just idiotic in a sense that doesn't make them funny.

I just finished watching an old episode of AFV with the Bobster and was relieved to see that the three finalists were both funny and not violently stupid. The winner was actually hilarious- it was a video of a bunch of people singing Happy Birthday to a toddler, and for some strange toddlery reason he was yelling at them, telling them not to sing. Hee Hee. Ah, the good old pre-Jack and Viva La Bam days.

We have Australia's Funniest Home Video Show and used to actually be funny but now its mostly people being hurt or whatever. And the audience is so dumb, the winning videos are most often the most boring, unimaginative ones ever. Coincides with society's intellegence I guess (lol).

They need to make fun of AFVideos on Saterday Night Live. To sort of give a nudge of what they're becoming. ;)

Comedy is definitely relative at times. If it was a sure thing TV writers would have a much easier job. While not every one is able to find the same humor in a joke, we often times find our own humor in similar circumstances.

There is the Unusual Comedy. Why is it funny to see a clown with a colorful wig, oversized shoes, and a nose that squeaks? Why is it funny to hear one's voice at a different tone after breathing helium? The reason: these things are unusual. Things that are unusual are funny. The unusual is probably the simplest and earliest form of comedy. Just spend a day with a two-year old. Watch her cackle with laughter if you take your shoe off and place it on your head, or crawl around with your tongue hanging out. This is not what normal adults do. It is unusual. It is funny.

Then there is the Familiar. Why is it funny when Dagwood is running late for work, gets yelled at by the boss, and finally spills his lunch all over the floor when a buckle on his lunchbox breaks? Could it be that something like that has happened to us? What is observational humor? It's that special nod of familiarity when a standup comedian complains of airline peanuts that don't open, grocery carts with one broken wheel, or hotel bathtubs that have no hot water or too much scalding water or no water pressure. These aren't unusual things ... They are terribly familiar and they make us laugh when they're pointed out.

Finally, (where I think we can find most of our humor today) there is the upset in power. It may not be funny if a beggar in the street gets hit with a pie; but when Bill Gates gets hit with the pie, it's hilarious. How about when the janitor says something that makes the big boss look stupid at an all-employee meeting? Not that funny when the tables are turned, but when the little guy wins, something insides us cheers for justice. There was a shift in the balance of power! That is funny!

Also, the time-honored pratfall (first immortalized by "man slipping on banana peelâ€
Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.

I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

I think it was the first "Decline of Video Gaming" that made fun of the sinking level of home video humor. I also only saw a snip of it, but 20/20 just did a special on "Caught on Tape" that covered Funniest Home Video submission hoaxes.

That show is terrible now...the old days were so much better. AFV has more laughtracks placed at stupid jokes than an episode of Darma and Greg and it's just as bad. I remember this one I saw a couple years ago with a baby crying because somebody was sucking it's hair up with a vacuum, how cruel is that?:shady:

Of course I admit I did laugh at this one video, not on AFV, where a javelin thrower's javelin hit one of the judge persons.

If you mean the "guy" that co-hosted with Daisy F, my sister told me he was killed in a car accident.

I was just watching it. But it was an old one with Bob Sagat. But I know what you mean. There's usually only like one funny video in the whole show.

I miss the ones with Bob Sagat. That's when my parents and me and my sister (who were just kids) could sit and just watch them without worrying bout some guy getting hit in the cortch and swearing a storm or a somone throwing up. Some of them are ok....but never make me laugh.

However, you want a funny family videos? On Animal Planet, they play World's Funniest Animal Videos which sometimes is childish (quirky noises and lame dialouge) but subsitutes all the crap on AFHV using animals. I find it quite humorous.

disgusting (the "naughty file)

They warn you. They tell you to look away. I personally love the naughty files...

But I think it should be TV14. Some of the videos (i.e. the talent show "no hands") aren't exactly appropriate.

I love that show. But there was one where the guy was joking about sex appeal and that was not funny. :shady:

And all and all you're just another brick in the wall

Golden_Griff, I couldn't agree more. I hate it when little kids are show getting hurt or almost getting hurt and they're all scared and crying, and these stupid morons think it's supposed to be funny. That really ticks me off. Because of that and the other stuff you mentioned I don't even like the show, because for the few things that are funny, it's not worth having to sit through all of the junk. Besides the host tends to ramble on too much just to try to look funny and draw attention. At least the current isn't half as bad as that guy who used to do it. I absolutely could not stand him.

AFV has adopted the "Groin hit= funny" Philosophy...

These days, people are getting bored with regular intertainment so they have turned to getting pleasure from the pain and suffering of others... example, fear factor... The people who thought up fear factor need to be forced to go through every stunt they have ever concieved, in a single day...

I mean the producers, everybody.

I don't think they tested the "walking barefoot on broken glass" one personally.. wich is pretty much watered down torture.. pretty soon they are going to be slaughtering people on gameshows...
