Internet Connection Poll

Postby Master Kenzo » Sun Sep 21, 2003 12:27 pm

This is a monumentally important poll, at least for me. Please mark your internet connection speed :) If you really want to know why I'm doing this, ask. But I'm not going to post if no one wants to know.

Please remember that internet connection is in kiloBITS and megaBITS not bytes.
I'm back to make a post or two every couple years...

I've got a T1 line, though the thing is it's kinda busted right now. The speed slows down and speeds up, and sometimes it just doesn't work at all, though I can still chat w/ people on IMs.

I have no connection, and I mainly post on other's computers. Ranges from 33.3 dialup to what I think is satellite.

Whoops, sometimes it doesn't pay to read the posts chronologically (posted in the other thread, too)...anyway, I'll go ahead and give my info here, too.

This connection is only a 768K-down ADSL, but it's 256K-up, which actually increases downstream throughput by allowing TCP ACKs to get back to the remote site faster and the next packet to arrive sooner.

I'm thinking of going 384K SDSL since the bulk of my traffic is stuff my data centre is serving, not stuff I'm downloading.

I have a very very slow 28.8 kbps (dial up). It's very very slow.

I use 56K most the time, but on my other computer I have Cable. The most I am able to get out of my cable connection is roughly 128kbs most of the time. Slow computer + cheap Ethernet Card = not enough speed.

We're on Shaw's lite-speed cable internet program, and if memory serves me correctly it's supposed to be about 5 times faster than dial-up (although it averages out to only 3 times faster); so I voted for the "256/300kbps (Cable/DSL)" option.

I voted I don't know because I have dialup that connects anywhere from 28k to 46k on a "good" day.

It's slow. Too slow-I wish I had DSL LOL.

I would rather have dial up than my T1 that doesn't "work" over half of the time.

Have you heard about those 90 somthing k modems that supposedly connect even faster than the phone line allows? Well, it doesn't matter as I don't have dialup!

I would only get satelite if I was too far from teh offices to get DSL or Cable... Satelite makes it very hard to have chats and instant messaging since even though the stream may be even higher than cable or DSL, it takes several seconds for you to receive and send it, making things like IM and online games rediculously hard to impossible...

The problem with satellite is the *uplink*, not the downlink. You may well have a fat downlink pipe on your dish with good (theoretical) download speeds, but often the uplink can't be done over the satellite link (poor signal strength or transmission). In many places, your uplink may actually be just a regular old dialup modem! :o

And remember, since every TCP/IP packet must be acknowledged as received by your computer, a lot of activity requires a correspondingly bigger uplink. So, the actual throughput of the downlink is hobbled as well, anyway.

Well, actually they have dual-signal satelite dishes now, so your info is old. The uplink can often be just as fast as the downlink, but when you send it the other person won't get it for like 3 seconds... It may be purely because of the distance it has to travel, but it also may be something wrong with the technology...

Note that I said *many* areas. I know they have dual-signal satellite dishes, but please read the post carefully ... many areas still have inadequate signal coverage or strength to make this possible.

Can you hear me now? Hello??? Stupid Verizon... Never get a good signal... :red:

Yeah, I was tempting fate with that post. Yeah, I suppose that's true...

:waah!:

In any case, I've had Dial-up, Cable, and DSL... I like Cable the Best, but mainly because it was a bundle deal with stuff like Showtime Beyond and the Action Channel, and the international channel, none of which I get now... :waah!:

I had 56K for 3 years at my Dad's house. When my hubby and I got married, we got DSL and I was so excited, everthing downled fast and everything, and now I have cable, which it's like 10x faster the DSL we had. I love it, plus you don't have to wait for it to be connected because it's always on. I love it, though of couse I wouldn't mind getting T1 or T3... When I'm rich... mine connects to the net at 115.2Kbps, even if it's dialup. but overall, it doesn't increase the speed at all, because the ISP servers allow only certain amount of bandwidth.

We have a 56 K modem (with AOL, talk about evil) at home, but my bf networked my other computer with his at his place, so I can get cable most of the time too.

Actually, I lied on my post. I'm supposed to have 1.5Mbs, but the service hasn't downgraded it from 3Mbs yet. Half the pakcets we send and receive are errors, the internet goes out frequently, AND I'm running a website...Brutal eh? I'd almost prefer to have the slow cable (was slow in my area) back...

I have dialup. I switch between Netzero and AOL (the AOL is my sister's). Since I put in the new modem (old one got fried..) I never get connected at more than 49k. It used to connect at 50, sometimes 52 if I got lucky. Must be the phone lines. I have never, ever, EVER once connected at 56k. Ever.

Oppression.

Cable internet is ridiculously expensive in this town. $50 a month, JUST for the internet! Screw that.
