You and the story of life

Postby Jaltus-bot » Fri Oct 15, 2004 7:30 pm

If you were to write a story and describe a character in it as yourself, what are some of the personality, mannerisms, and etc. that you would describe in telling about the character? (Please answer in third person if possible.

Description: Anything, just if you were to put yourself as a character in a story, how would you describe yourself?)

That's a difficult question. ^^
So, if I were a character in a story, who would I be and what would you describe me as?

All the characters in the stories I write all happen to posess one facet of my personality, but at the moment, I think my mannerisms are a mix between that of my assassin boy Torres and my mage girl, Aki.

If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you’re sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that’s almost never the case." - Chuck Close

Mine would be gentle yet strong.... not afraid in the face of danger, but ready to fight for justice at any cost. He would hate oppresion and racism, and would never discriminate against anybody. He would have a short temper for evildoers, and would be ready to help anybody out where needed.

That is the legacy of Azier the Swordsman.

As a writer the author often if not always injects part of their personality into one or more of their characters.

I'm writing a Christian steampunk novella (talk about original!) and the main character in it is a young man called Dexiz (pronounced Dex eez). He lives in a broken world surrounded by darkness (evil, sin), he does not know light (good, salvation, grace) until he discovers it, then he pursues it. Dexiz is an anti hero at first, but then he comes to know God and grows in his faith.

Because this is a faith journey and quite personal Dexiz possess some of my dark personality traits that I rather would not have. He has a negative and somewhat depressing attitude to life, has a short temper and is sarcastic and often selfish.

Another character in my story, is Dexis' dad called Luemas (pronounced Loo mus). He possess my good personality traits. He has a fun loving personality, strong faith in God, stands up for what is right and at times is serious. He is respectful and loyal.

Okay, it was weird writing this! I tried to be honest though.

You wouldn't have called him tall...no, not tall...but he walked that way. His hair was long and dark, but his countenance bright...at least most of the time. Actually, now that I think about it, he was the kind of guy that gave you the impression he was entirely comfortable being around people, but somehow you knew he was just as comfortable being by himself. Though you never saw him alone you just knew that there had to be times, many times, wher he was. I guess it sounds like I'm describing a bit of a mixture...I suppose that's accurate! You see many times he was a lighthearted, funny guy to be around, but he was a thinker, and serious about it too. He cared about truth and integrity - not just in a philosphical, essay kind of way, but as though they mattered like life and death. Sometimes I supposed they weighed on him, but most of the time it just came across as genuine concern and belief. If he was talking about something that mattered to him, you'd know. If someone needed something, or wanted some advice, he'd happily give it and make sure he did a good job, and an honest one. Actually that brings something to mind, if you ever knew him, you knew that if he asked how you were, he meant it. He'd be watching your eyes and if it seemed like something was up, and he felt like he wasn't intruding, he'd press the point and ask again! He was pretty confident with people. That's maybe one of his main traits...confidence. Her had this thing he called "Preacher's Bluff". He used to say that when he was a kid he'd look up at preachers and how it seemed they knew eveything and were so confident. Eventually he got to preach himself, and there was one time when he looked down and saw a kid listening, and it stuck him that that kid was probably thinking just what he used to think, yet in reality he wasn't the wise, all-knowing man of God the kid thought he was. He took that and used it recognising that people have a tendency to think less of themselves and more of others in situations where they aren't familiar. So yeah, he was always pretty confident. Hmmm, then there was always his quirky side, I supposed it could be called nerdy. He had a lot of little interests in things - plants, fish, comics, computers...all kinds of things. He always seemed to have a little bit of knowledge about most things. I mean really random things. A subject or something might come up out of the blue, and there he'd be with this knowledge hidden away that no-one knew he had. He could surprise you at times, and did me on a number of occasions. It all made sense though when he told me something once. You see he loved to learn, he found interest in things that a lot of people would find boring; that's I guess why he could seem nerdy at times. Anyway, he said that since God created the whole universe; that the universe bore his fingerprint just as a painting might carry the traits of the artist, that you could learn something about God in everything and every situation. He said that learning enriched life and it built faith. The more you look the more wonder you find, and that taking joy in the creation is actually learning to take joy in the Creator. I mean, you can say you know and love an artist, but if you don't take the time to look at his art, don't see any value in it, or don't like it, do you really know or love the artist?

Actually, that sounds pretty critical and I'm not sure that represents him properly. You see he could be really critical of ideas and thoughts, and he used to be very critical of people too. But there came a time when he realised all of the flaws in himself, and from that point, he always tried never to be critical of a person, certainly not to them. He could be pretty critical of himself though. I think that was one of his bad points. He was always thinking, which was good, and a lot of times he was happy and....light...yeah that's a good word, but there were times when he maybe thought a bit too much - I wish at those times I could have dragged him away from himself. He always seemed to come around, it was just difficult before that happened. It's as though however he was at any time, it would affect people. If he was up he'd lift you up, but if he was down, at first it was pretty bad for those close to him, but eventually he started to learn, and things were much better! I guess it's art again - and people are God's art, and we should try to appreciate them, to understand them, and to see what God's doing in them. Especially since we're all unfinished works! I know that's what he tried to do, and it's what he started to learn about himself.

Well, I'm rambling, I should quit now. I suppose if I had to some him up, that's what I'd say...you know...about affecting people. I'd have to describe him as a fountain, a natural fountain....like a spring, you know? He had this gift to affect people, to get inside of them. He'd be full of all this stuff - ideas, passions, words.....life I guess, and whenever you were around him he'd pass that on. Sometimes because he was trying, other times when he wasn't. I guess it was his hope that knowing him and being with him would leave you the better for it and not the worse.

how would i describe a character that is based on me?

Putting up a front when around others, to avoid having to answer intimate questions about what he is, but who he has chosen to be.

in despair when alone, unable to cope with the reality of his failures.

fustrated that he is an Ordinary Joe. nothing special, nothing unique.

he is driven by a sense of duty. he must do right. he must be kind. he must...

If I were in a story I would be the narator in a thrid person omniscient ... no name, no readily apparent personality ... just sort of watching everybody and analysing how they act and react with eachother and to events and relating it to the reader.

I would probably be a boring main character though becuase I occupy most of my time philosophizing (more along the lines of overcomplicating simple stuff then actual intelectual thoughts) and observing people. I don't talk too much until I know exactly how someone will respond to my words and if I do talk I come across as having a stong desire to see the streets run with the blood of all who oppose me ... so I suppose my personality would be a passable sadistic emperess of some sort but that would bother me as I really would rather not be in the public eye or have bloody streets ....

This part sounds alot like me.

I guess, now that it is no longer 1:03 AM, that I should just write out what I think I would be instead of waiting for someone else to do it for me. ^^ Because it's become evident that this isn't going to happen...

(I just know I want to know where I can get a copy of that novel, Kokoro! >_< Man, that was some good writing. I always knew she was one of the best writers on CAA - hmm, how she hides her talent so well. )

Okay, Valerie is a person who walks with a bit of a skip in her step, and is usually smiling. Some people perceive her has a mindless idiot because she's so darn "happy faced" all the time.

However, she can also be the dogmatic, willful, never stand down type of person when there is an issue of truth or when her kids are involved - because you hurt her kids - you die:evil: Okay, so I am joking here.

She would either be the joking smart aleck or the kick-butt chick in an anime.

Her kids see her as the coolest mom. :eyeroll: Uh-huh, yeah. She will go outside and get on the scooter or skateboard, even a pogo stick because they're freakin' FUN! For Christmas she's had gifts like Basketball hoops, tennis racquets, kicking bags and boxing gloves because she's energetic. She also gets lots of CDs because she loves music. And, she's getting herself One Piece for Christmas, because she loves this anime.XDXD

Anyways, Valerie can be very quiet at times and too introspective and get all depressed about things - so that maybe there is more to her than people see on the outside. She loves to be genuine, and hates when people are not genuine and fake. And, when she is sincere, she means it from the most inner part of her being. This is probably why she's a writer.:P

And, she writes waaaaaay too much.:eyeroll:

YOU SEE

You see into the deepest part of me ---

beyond the fog I hide behind.

You cast your light upon the shadows

that stretch like cobwebs in my mind.

You ease the pain when I am hurting,

and morbid visions from my past

pierce into the realm of Reason

as though I danced on blades of glass.

You grant me strength when I have fallen

and, once again, I've lost my way.

You take my hand in Yours and lead me

into the promise of a brand new day.

You bring order to all my chaos,

yet set my well-laid plans awry.

You place me on a firm foundation ---

then give me wings so I can fly.

You sand away my roughened edges

and polish all the dullest parts

until I stand before Your presence...

a newly-sculpted work of art.

You see into the heart within me,

right through my motives and selfish will.

And yet, in spite of all You see

You say You love me even still.

Oh! This is such a cool idea. And lots of nice answers. ^-^

Mine would be:

She is quiet and shy but still fights to be nice to strangers. She tries to be polite but some see this as coldness. She confuses herself alot because of a current inner conflict inside. Since insist to fight it alone she trusts a very small group of people. This in turn means that she has very little close friends, to she acts like her true self.

Oh, it's so short and stupid! I embarass myself again!

This is an interesting idea. Here goes:

What you thought of CB would greatly depend on how long you had known him.

If you saw him on the street, you might make note of the fact that he looked you directly in the eyes as he passed, holding his ground rather than moving out of your way. On a good day he would be smiling playfully; on a bad day his face would be as cold and uninviting as a tombstone. Thankfully he didn't have many bad days.

If for some reason you stopped long enough to talk to him, you might be surprised by his ability to communicate with so few words, while still managing not to sound rude. It wasn't that he didn't like you, but you had just interrupted him in the middle of a very important thought, like a parent waking their child in the middle of a wonderful dream. As the conversation progressed, you might become aware of his lack of awkwardness during silences. Rather than speak himself, he would challenge you to fill the gap, seeing who could hold out the longest before giving in.

Over time you would begin to comprehend more is his personality. You might discover that he delighted in exposing hypocrisy and falsehood, even when it was his own. Although competitive, CB was usually able to remember that it was all just a game; consequently he lost more often than the unenlightened. You would find that the best word to describe his personality is "mercurial." You would also find that he didn't like it when people tried to reduce him to a single word.

As you became friends (which would take somewhat longer than it would with others), you would appreciate CB's devotion, courage, and his ability to treat anything as a joke if he knew that it would annoy you. For this reason his mind was filled with laughter, which often spilled over to his face. If not on his lips, then certainly in his eyes. You would marvel at his videogame collection, laugh at his taste in movies, and wonder how he stayed slim when there was always a mountain of candy in his room. What you wouldn't know is that he had picked up a sweet tooth from his grandfather, with the added bonus of knowing that he was different in this way from his father, who rarely at candy.

However, you would know that he loved his family, visting them on every holiday while others might choose to remain at school. Neither he nor they would have it any other way.

Although you would see that he is religious, you might be aware the he is also critical of religion, and that he mocked people he like to say that Jesus is not a religion. This was not surprising, since he derived such pleasure from the foolishness of others. He wasn't afraid to worship God, but at times he felt like Tom Sawyer, the last sinner on earth sitting in his chair while everyone else is speaking in tongues and rolling on the floor with divine seizures.

Finally, you would be impressed by his willingness to help others (most of the time), offering assistance wherever it was needed.

But of course you still wouldn't know very much about him, for the most interesting things happened when he was alone...

Do I regret taking the time to write this rather than doing my English homework? Not at all...
