My dog killed two rabbits. I am just surprised, because I always assumed that she was a generally nice dog. I mean, I know it's probably her nature to kill things like that, so I don't really blame her, but it's really disturbing when your dog is walking around with blood on her paws and getting blood on the kitchen floor and then seeing a bloody ripped up rabbit being put into a paper bag. Then my mom and dad go out and find the rabbit nest and kill those off (well, they said they threw them in the trash), which was about ten.

Those rabbits have been in our backyard for a while, but I didn't know my mom was serious when she said she really wanted to kill them. I had been on their side all along. I liked them, who cares if they ate some of her stupid flowers. I'm not an animal rights activist or anything, but I really didn't want any rabbits killed.

The worst part wasn't the fact that my dog kept wagging her tail and jumping around as if she had just discovered a cure for the common cold, but my brother kept gloating about it. I know this is very un-Christian, but I just wanted to knock him in the face. I didn't think it was funny. Is that a guy thing? It's one thing to kill something that's messing up your house, but to gloat about it? That's just wrong. And I snap at him and ask him to PLEASE stop talking, and of course, my mom tells me to fix my attitude. But I won't go into that, because I think I could write a ten-page essay on how my brother can get away with stuff like that, and I can't.

What would you do if there was a rabbit or other animal like that in your yard?

Well...if it wasn't for a pack of strays, I would have probably about 70 cats right now. They'd come around daily just about and kill off one or two, maybe three somedays. Some of our cats just disappeared. Oh, how I wanted to kill those dogs so much...I just never ran into them when I was armed, otherwise, I WOULD have killed them. They tried to attack my grandma one time. Most of our cats are wild, so we can't give them away.

i had a pet rabbit once, it died though. it was a boring pet anyways, but anyways im a hunter, killing animals doesnt bother me.

Oh, Nia-chan, that's really sad. I'm glad that you're not upset with your dog because you're right, it's in her nature to do that. I'm sorry that you had to see what you did. I don't really know how destructive rabbits can get, but some people see animals and "pests" in different lights. I wouldn't go so far as to say it was a guy thing, but more of a personality thing. I hope you're not so angry tomorrow.

Oh dear, what a horrible thing! I would have been traumatized because I'm such an BIG rabbit lover. I had pet rabbits (and they bred too) when I was younger and I grieved much when they died of old age.

Like Gypsy said, it's a dog's nature to do such a thing, something like a hunter instinct (?). Personally, I wouldn't call the rabbit a pest since it's a rabbit's nature to go eat your garden up. Rabbits need to eat something anyway. Poor bunnies.

I don't support your brother's gloating but I don't think you can force him to change his attitude. As long as you've expressed your opinion, just leave it as it is. You've done your best.

EDIT: erm...I didn't address the question. If I had rabbits in my backyard, I'll fence up the important plants for protection but otherwise, I'll let them run around rampantly. Nuts, I might even feed them with leftover vegetables since I'm quite a vegetarian myself (not completely but close). But I would never kill bunnies.

I'm really sorry about what happened Nia-chan, and the fact you had to watch it. That's always the hardest thing to have to see something as violent as one animal killing another. You're right though, it is in the dog's nature, so I'm glad you didn't hold it against your dog.

In regard to your question, I would safely trap the animal and move it to a park or some other open area and out of my yard if it was making a mess of it. I really love my flowers, but not more than any living creature. However, we have three rat terriers, and there are no little creatures that would ever be dumb enough to live in our backyard, or they'd definitely be chewed on. ^_^ We do have squirrels that toss nuts onto our dogs heads, and screech to taunt them and make them bark, but they fly through the trees and escape being mauled by our doggies.

I hope your week goes better for you. ^_^ And, don't worry about your brother, I have one, and he'll be like that until you're both adults, and then he won't get to you quite as much. I have a feeling that he made the comments he did to upset you - which is so like a brother.

That is a sad thing to have happen. I love animals as well, but some things cant be helped. Your dog, most likely, just wanted to play with the rabits. It probably had no intention of harming the animals, it merely got carried away with "playing" with them.

I supose the fact that it was a family of rabits only made it harder for you.

I would like to apologize, on behalf of all guys, for the way your brother acted. Sorry, guys can be big jerks some times. Especialy if we think we are funny.

Anyway, we have 2 dogs, both of which are basically to old to really get at the rabbits in our backyard stealing OUR veggies Last year a rabbit dug a hole in the ground near our garden (location, location eh?) Speaking of digging, I doubt mave's idea of building a fence would hold them off for long.. it would probably take a lot more time (let alone money) for you to build it than it will for them to dig under it!

I wish your mom and dad hadnt killed the baby rabbits; the petstore might have taken them off your hands... I mean they took our baby MICE i'm sure they wouldnt mind some rabbits!

I live in a wilderness area, so I have all sorts of animals around my house all of the time. This includes deer, rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, possums, mice, snakes, and (rarely) bears. To kill, trap, or otherwise try to get rid of any one of these would be the proverbial case of covering a bullet wound with a band-aid. I like the animals, and they don't really cause any trouble. Besides, I suppose it would be different if my mom spent a lot of time on her garden. I have had a few cats "disappear" over the years, and it is fairly likely that they were killed by something.

I agree that it is in the nature of dogs (and all carnivorous animals) to kill and eat other living things; so you can't really hold them accountable if they do it. However, being an older brother myself, I can't (or rather, I won't) apologize for anything.

True, many pet stores do take mice. However it is unlikely they will sell those same mice to some one else as pets. The reality here is that pet shops tend to sell all kinds of animal feed, even for snakes.....See where this is going?

Oh man, *deeply inhales* that's true. My friend has pet snakes and he buys.........frozen baby mice to feed the snakes. I'm so so SO sorry, that I have to share this. But it's the truth and sometimes it hurts.

hmmm... I had a friend who had a snake who ate frozen baby white mice.... but the question is, would the frozen-baby-white-mouse rights activists feel indignant if people kept birdsof prey (for example) as pets and fed them frozen baby green snakes?
