The SNES is timeless I think. Never was there a system that was as thoroughly enjoyable as the SNES. There are so many classics, and so many favourites.

[color=DarkGreen]Hehe, I like you. There are only three games on that list I'm not thorougly familiar with from many years of gaming and only one I haven't played at least once...:thumb:

Yes! The SNES lives on and to this date I go back and emulate the living daylights out of some of those classic games. Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy IV, VI, Super Mario All Stars, Super Ghouls and Ghost, Actraiser, Castlevania IV, Super Metroid, Super Mario World...the list goes on and on.

And when I first boot up Mario World my eyes were shimmering with glee. I luv that yellow-caped Mario.

No, my friend... Super Famicom was MUCH better than Super Nintendo... While you puny SNESers were on "Final Fantasy III" The SFCers were coming toe to toe with an angelic boss on "Final Fantasy 6" (you know, the really slow ones since it took quite a while to translated...) While you were waiting for the Secret of Mana 2 you'd never get, the SFCers were allready on Seiken Densetsu THREE! I laugh at your puny SNES... And, well, MY puny SNES... I laugh at it... :waah!: see, I'm laughing... :eh:

Um... Yeah, Super Nintendo was great... Is great... It was the pinnacle of 2d systems.

Too much good stuff

I would really love to get "Umi Hara Kawase" legitimately, but don't you have to cut into the SNES to play SFC games?

Yusuke > nearly anything else in the world for having such good tastes.
There are so many classics that it's nearly impossible to list them. Heck, some SNES/SF games are timeless simply for nostalgic value *looks at Soulblazer and Addams Family ROMs*.

"My additions to the list:

I don't think I've ever been as attracted to a man as I am to Link right now.

That is true. I think the SNES is perhaps one of the greatest systems ever. If there were a next generation consule with such a great number of classics, I think it would own the gaming world.

I liked the SNES...it was the start for so many of my current favorites as I now know them. Streetfigher first hit its stride on the SNES, and Mega Man went from good to awesome. And we can't forget Mortal Kombat. I don't like Nintendo today, but I have to respect the SNES.

My additions to the list:
Mega Man 9: Rockman and Forte
Mega Man 7
Super Street Fighter 2: Turbo
Gundam Wing: Endless Duel
Dragonball Z: Hyper Dimension
Gradius 3
Contra 3
Macross
Aerowings

NOBODY has touched the SNES on my favorite genre, the platform jumper. Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Donkey Kong Country series, Kirby 3 and Superstars. Throw in platform shooters like the Megaman series, Contra 3, Earthworm Jim 1&2 (yeah they started on Genesis), awesome puzzlers like the Bomberman games and Tetris Attack, and beat em ups like Spiderman Maximum Carnage and Serparation Anxiety, and you've got the greatest overall system ever. Yes RPGs have gone beyond everyone's wildest dreams on the new systems, but the new systems are getting shuffled out before they can establish the kind of riegn the SNES enjoyed. It shall live forever in our hearts (and on our emulators  {who said that?} :eyeroll: )

Amen...

I almost did the buddhist clap, but I'm not buddhist and nobody's dead or dying...

SD3 was the ultimate SFC game... 20 distinctive endings but unlike it's sucessor, it acutally has a coherent and followable plot... I hate SD4 so much... SD3 was the perfect ballance of linear and non-linear... (I so desperately need a spell check)

I can't believe I said "SD4 was the perfect ballance" that was the exact opposite of what I wanted to say... SD4 took the non-linear thing too far. It was cutesy and had a horrible battle system (only two attack directions? left and right?) Gone was the feeling of exploration... Gone the feeling of most anything SD...

SD4 was called "Legend of Mana" in the US. SD2 on SNES was called "Secret of Mana" and SD1 was called "Final Fantasy Adventure" in the US, but later got re-released on GBA and called "Sword of Mana" to keep the names consistant. SD1-3 were all great games... I think the 4th in long series are usually the worst... Mario not included in that (depending on whether you consider Donkey Kong the first mario game, making "Lost Levels" or Super Mario 2 the fourth game, or whether you consider Mario Bros the first game, making Super Mario 3 the fourth... I guess the "Lost Levels" SMB2 was a mediocre modification of Super Mario Brothers, so the "4th in the series" fits tehre... Funny thing is, the most complained about Metal Gear game is actually 4th in the series unless you consider "Ghost Babel" canon)

Hmm... have I played SD3? I'm uncertain, and it's possible what I played was SD4. Did SD3 involve the mana sword? Can someone give me a really basic plot outline so I know which game we're talking about?

PostPosted: Tue Mar 30, 2004 5:57 am
by Bobtheduck
Um... All of the games involved the Mana sword. SH3 was about the 6 conflicting kingdoms. There were six main charachters of which you could play 3 at a time.

Duran - The Knight
Angela - The Witch/(black mage)
Charleotte/Carlie - The Priestess (white mage)
Kevin - The Werewolf (berserker)
Lise/Riez - The Amazoness
Hawkeye - The Thief

They all have their own stories of why they are seeking out the Mana priest (except for Carlie, because she's his granddaughter) and then why they are seeking out the Mana sword and the Mana stones. Duran's kingdom was invaded by the Witch queen (Angela's Mother) Angela's mother was influenced by some weird guy. The guy Carlie likes was taken away by the guy who corrupted the Werewolf king, The werewolf king was influenced and led an attack on a lot of different towns, and in the process Kevin lost his dog and was kicked out of the kingdom after this wierd clown guy caused him to kill his dog, Riez/Lise must find a way to drive the thieves out of their kingdom, and Hawkeye is bound by a curse that if he clears himself of the murder of his best friend, his girlfriend will die. They are all seeking help from the Mana priest, and whoever you choose first will come in contact with a Mana fairy who will reside in their heads for the rest of the game.

The order you choose the characters will chage certain events. For instance, the last battle is decided by the first two people you choose. There are, I believe, 20 different last battles. Also, the fairy goes in the head of whoever you choose first and you play out the game as the first person you choose. The second person will usually meet you at the gate (unless you have carlie on your team) and the third person will usually meet you in prison (once again, unless you have carlie on your team) That's just some of many events that are different based on who you have on your team and what order you choose them. The stories for each scenario are pretty straight forward.

There is a class change system that anyone who's played the SD1 remake will be familiar with. You can class change twice using the Mana stones. You can choose a dark path or a light path. Choosing a dark path means you have greater attack power, choosing a light path means you have greater support and defense power. There are 4 final combonations possible. (7 classes per character alltogether) All of the characters can use some magic depending on the direction they choose. For instance, the light path all the way on Duran will give him healing magic. The dark side all of the way for Carlie will give her summoning abilities. The light side all the way for angela... Well, I forget...

The most powerfull of the bunch is Hawkeye. He has the best class changes, in my opinion. However, having him in your team, particularly in the first 2, really makes the scenario more difficult. Because he's stronger and because his story is a bit more complex, his scenario puts harder things in his way and his last battles are the hardest in the game.

This game has all the Mana familiarities. The ring menu, rabites, flammie, the mana sword, the Mana Tree... All are there. The enemies in this game can level up, so you can actually fight a rabite at level 18 that's just as powerfull as you. The battle system, in my opinion, reached its best in SD3. It's not as action oriented as the others, so it sort of disappointed many people. Some people can't figure it out, but I figured it out and it's probably the best ARPG battle system in existance IMNSHO.

I could go on for hours about this game... It's just too good. It pushed the visuals on the SNES to the extreme (I ventured to say that some of the bosses on here looked better than early PS1 stuff) It's a beautiful game without getting too cutesy (like SD4 and even the SD1 remake get) and it has an incredible story.

Yes, I've beaten that one. Actually, you just would have needed to list the characters...

I agree, it was a great game. The class system was also quite interesting. I'm a Hawkeye fan myself, though the first game I played was with Duran. Also making this game better was the Black Rabbite.

However, I don't think there were 20 different final boss battles. Just three, as far as I know (Dragon Lord, Lich, and someone else). Each two of the original characters is attached to one final boss, at least that was the consensus I found on the internet. Then again, I and others could be wrong.

I know with Duran + Carlie I got the Dragon Lord. Did anyone else get him with another combination?

I got the Mana Goddess as my last boss, so maybe she's the third. I don't remember who I did for my team. I think I had Hawkeye, Riez/Lise, and Angela.

Maybe the combonation changes not just the last boss, but a couple other major bosses as well, and that's where I got the 20 thing. I don't know... I guess the number would only count up to 15 [button=count]1-2 1-3 1-4 1-5 1-6 2-3 2-4 2-5 2-6 3-4 3-5 3-6 4-5 4-6 5-6[/button] anyhow... I thought I read 20 in one of the guides. Oh well. It's still a great game, nonetheless.

That's true... each final portion of the game has three different bosses. These bosses will always directly have to do with your characters. For example, with Duran I fought a black knight who was really Duran's father. I'm not sure if there are only three sets of three final bosses, or quite a few more than that. But as you expressed: oh well.

What about Super Ghouls and Ghosts? TO date I have NEVER beaten that game. I've come close, but that stupid bracelet is such a useless weapon on the last level of the game that I always just get too frustrated and give up. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, kudos to you.

Oh yeah...Maximum Carnage and Separation Anxiety...I forgot about those. They are still my favorite spider-man games, and probably my favorite Marvel games. Thanks for the nostalgia righteous slave.

Don't forget that Killer Instinct (made by probably my most favorite developer ever in Rare) made it's console debut on the SNES. When will a sequel be made? Ever? Or is there some part of the rights to that owned by Nintendo that can never be reclaimed by Rare?

I think that the reason so many people loved the SNES was the great gameplay experience that it captured. At the time of the SNES, the creativity and savvy of nintendo was on the cutting edge. Also they had a knack for creating wonderful, franchisable games, which are still basically the Holy Grail for developers (and explain the current sequel-mania in the industry). Makes ya wonder why nintendo is bombing so hard right now, but I guess that's another thread. Personally I almost want them to give up on console development and become a third-party developer like Sega. Or, make an unholy alliance with Sega and make a console (as somebody already said in the 10 years from now thread). Between the two of them, I think they'd have a great shot at success.

Oh yeah, where was I...SNES games. I wasn't really into RPG's back then, so I missed out on some great games. But if it wasn't for FF3 on the SNES, I might have never come to like RPG's, so I guess I owe that to the SNES as well.

Did anyone ever play Uniracers? I thought that was a pretty innovative game for its time, and it was the first game that I can remember where doing stunts gave you a speed boost (a concept that was copied in many games that followed). That's pretty good fun for a while.

Wouldn't Mixing nintendo and sega be like mixing acids and alkalines?

EDIT: Wouldn't Mixing nintendo and sega in that way be like mixing acids and alkalines? I allready know Sega released cube games and GBA games.

No problem, I'm reaching that point in life where I am starting to be fueled almost exclusively by nostalgia.

There was a Killer Instinct Gold on the N64 that I never got to play, other then that, I think it's dead in the water.

I've got Uniracers on emu, haven't played it much, but it does look cool. No riders, just lonley little unicycles speeding along twisted, looping tracks.

I've been through the game twice, my first time through was with Duran, Carlie(as main), and the magician girl I believe (my second time through was with the other 3 I hadn't played yet) I really don't remember who I fought because it was so long ago. I do recall going "what the fudge?" when I realized the second time I played the ending was taking quite a different turn. I hadn't read anything about the game at all, just started playing it becuase I had downloaded it and it looked cool, so it came as a surprise to me.
