Not Another Revo Thread! XD

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

Not Another Revo Thread! XD

Perhaps we need one stickied thread for these kinds of things. I dunno...

ANYHOO, new announcement about the beloved little Nintendo beauty...

According to a few sources (including IGN, I believe), the Revo will be able to play Sega Genesis AND Turbografx games.

REJOICE WITH ME!!

I cannot rejoice, as I have dial-up, thus rendering such developments useless to me. :P

Nonetheless, this is a good move for the Big N. I was kind of worried that Nintendo wouldn't be getting many third-party games for their download service. But getting games from former competing consoles? Now THAT is a stroke of genius.

That is awesome news indeed. Yet another reason why I'm getting the Revo first.

And the "revolution", once again, looks back to classic gaming for it's inspiration.

Now if they would just allow you to play sega saturn and dreamcast games on it....

The question still remains... What sort of service do they have for the downloading? If it's, like, 20 bucks a game, or something, it's not gonna be worth it... I've said all along this service will make or break them, and saying what system's games it will carry doesn't answer the two most important questions: Pricing scheme and license acquisition... The idea that Nintendo could just have the rights to sell every game ever released on its systems is absurd... The properties belong to their respective creators, not to N. So, those are two very important questions to be answered... I'm guessing Sega properties (like, say, Sonic) will be included, but that doesn't say anything for the numerous other properties out there...

Although I doubt Saturn and Dreamcast games will be available, it is possible, I suppose. If so, I could finally play "Nights," "Space Channel 5," all the "Panzer Dragoon" games, and the original "Jet Set Radio." Unfortunately, I'm thinking that "Samba Amigo" would not be playable.

Maybe I should just find a used Saturn and Dreamcast on eBay and buy those games I want used. Perhaps shelf space is what is keeping me from it. ;)

That's somethign I've been thinking about, too, Bob. This is just sounding too good to be true. Price and selection are hugely important. And who says that the pricing will be even across the board? I envision (just hypothetically here...I don't believe for one moment that the selection will extend this far, but bear with me) stuff like this: Sonic the Hedgehog or Mortal Kombat for Genesis will cost a pittance, but if you want to download a rarer, more sought-after game like Shining Force you'd have to pay more.

Probably you won't be able to access any games that you can't buy for a dollar or two on the actual system. But I'm a pessimist. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how this pans out.

The other possibility is that it's a subscription service, so you have to pay x amount a month or year to have access to the downloads.

I wish you'd somehow beable to acquire the game for free if you already owned a hardcopy of it. But that could lead to piracy and other stuff. Aren't they essentially ROMS?

Yes to all of those.
And why wouldn't you be able to play Samba Amigo? The Revo controller itself would be perfect for it.

Yes...but the people who own them will have liscened them to Nintendo, so it'll be legal.

o.O I am rather dumb, aren't I? The Revo controller would indeed be wonderful for it. But wouldn't you need two of them?

That would involve buying another controller! For shame! ;)

Another thing I wanted to mention is Nintendo's keynote at the GDC, in which they discussed that their strategy is going to be a "disruptive" one, much like Pepsi versus Coke. Pepsi can never top Coke in the industry, but they can shake the market up enough to still be successful in the industry, not to mention have products outside of Pepsi that can dominate other Coke products.

I like that strategy, and I'm glad Nintendo is finally realizing that they don't need to beat Sony and gain market dominance. Their portables are on top in the industry, so their consoles can take a back seat in terms of profit. Their portables can let the consoles march on. Much like Mountain Dew, for example, lets Pepsi march on, despite Pepsi's second-place to Coke.

And for the record, Pepsi is better than Coke. Unless it's Coke in a glass bottle. XD

Indeed. Though with the Revo's innovation, it looks more like their consoles are sitting in the passenger's seat instead of the back one. :D

Don't let anyone in my family hear you say that. XD
