A not-so-short description of M2:
Earthbound (Mother 2) is a great game. The story is good; it tries to be serious but keeps comedy involved as well. The game isn't terribly difficult, which is kind of unfortunate. If there's ever been an RPG that needed a difficulty setting, it's this one. But still, the characters are all very memorable and unique in their own ways, and all are psychic, with the exception of Jeff. The game is also very strange at points, especially the Mr. Saturns (I love Mr. Saturn!!) and the weapons and items that you can end up using are strange as well, including a wide range of items such as baseball bats, bombs, teddy bears, frying pans, fireworks, a sword, laser beams, a pencil eraser and an eraser eraser (which are *NOT* what you think they are, I promise ^_^), and a pair of smelly socks. Over all, if you're looking for an epic RPG with all sorts of deep twists and turns, then go play Final Fantasy. If you want a good, clean, fun RPG, then Earthbound is what you need to play.
The combat system isn't like most, though, as it's text based. At the bottom of the screen, there are 1-4 windows that represent the character and tell you their HP/PP. At the top is the command box that, well, has all the commands. You don't actually see your party during combat; you only see the enemies (kind of like a first person view). Once you enter commands, the command box becomes a scrolling text box that tells you what's happening (like, "Ness attacks! The New Age Retro Hippie takes XX damage!").
