I know this is an older game (2003) but I saw it somewhere and was interested in it. Anyone know about it?

ever play disgaea? it's similar to that. it's a tactical rpg, made by the disgaea people. it's a pretty good game too. here's the link to the xplay review
http://www.g4tv.com/xplay/features/49849/Phantom_Brave_Review.html
on that page there's a video review (warning, there may be mild swearing), so you can see a bit of the gameplay for yourself and see if it's anything you'd be interested in. hope that helps!

I heard that Phantom Brave was kind of a let down in comparison to La Pucelle and Disgaea. A friend of mine has every NIS game from PSX and on, and he said that Phantom Brave wasn't as good as the others are. I've never played it, though.

I rented it a couple of years back and enjoyed it. Have you ever played Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics? It kinda' like that... more or less an engaging RPG form of chess. However, the interesting twist in Phantom Brave is that your army is made up of "Phantoms". -Or basically objects on the battlefield you "confine" with a Phantom and turn into you soldier for a number of turn.
While it isn't a graphical showcase for the PS2, it's still a nice looking game and the gameplay is rock solid, if you like strategy.
The story is a little childish (the voice acting isn't too bad, though), but it does compel you to keep on playing – trying to find out what happens next.
I saw it on Amazon for $14.99, so I recommend checking it out. I did hear La Pucelle is also good (if not better) –it’s made by the same company.

Like others said, it's a SRPG.
The only human you control is Marona and the rest are phantoms that you "confine" into whatever objects are laying around.
I got a kick out of the fact that you can use absolutely any objects that you can pick up as weapons. So, aside from traditional weapons, you can also wield weeds, flowers, trees, rocks, trolley cars, vases, bones, phonographs, logs, tree stumps, etc. And they all have their own skillsets. My Marona was cutting down enemies left and right with a weed......
The one major flaw of the game was that it tended to require a lot of leveling up, like other NIS SRPGs. That's why I got rather tired of it and haven't actually finished it.
