It is smaller than the current model - 133 x 73.9 x 21.5mm against 148.7 x 84.7 x 27.9. It is also lighter, at 218g against 295g. It will sell for 16,800 yen ($145), compared with the current model's price of 15,000 yen ($130).

Nintendo added that its DS broken a record in domestic sells reaching 5 millions units in less than 13 months. The company also confirmed it sold 5.7 millions units in 2005. Nintendo explained the name 'Lite' as a reference to the pure white used for the color and its very compact size and weight.

DS Lite's features an updated set of backlit LCD screens, allowing the user to select from four levels of brightness. The hinge has been redesigned and the mike, speakers and burrons have been moved slightly.

The announcement comes just ten days after the firm sought to dampen rumors, reported here, that a redesign is in the offing.

Our Japanese correspondent Christophe Kagotani writes, "For the moment it is an additional model in the DS line-up. It may replace it in the future but nothing has been said about such a thing yet."

"I have heard that it was designed to target the traditionally non gamer adult audience which is so excited with the DS in Japan: female users and adult users (35+ years old). It seems also that it is less expensive to make but that is not confirmed.

"As for the US, no details yet, but it will certainly cross the Pacific at some point. Japan will serve as a test I guess. Curiously, it is more expensive than the current model. This may prove that the Lite vesion is for an adult target and not kids. At lest for the moment."

Grr... Now I don't know if I should wait and get one of these instead of the current model...

Personally, the only problem I have with the current DS is that it is a bit heavy (especially noticed with games that use the stylus). So having it be slightly lighter could be nice, the other 'upgrades' don't seem that important to me though.

If there's something you want the DS for now (as in you were about to buy it when you see this), I think it's reasonable to just get it. If the wait won't kill you, you can do that ;). One thing to remember EBGames accepted the original GBA as a tradein toward most of the price of the upgraded SP model when that was released, so you could hope for a similar deal here.

Hmm...sounds like Nintendo, releasing another version of an already existing product even though there's no need to. I love 'em, I really do, but geez...

At least it's not like it's gigantor brother (Which is why I went with the PSP) , I might actually buy this one.

Whats better is that if there is no US release... play-asia.com is your friend! Because theres no region-protection. Plus language changes totally rock.

Ya know... you don't have to buy it.

I don't mind the new version and maybe it'll accomplish its purpose, which is apparently to spread to more "adult" audiences (somehow).

^_^; Well I know I don't have to buy it, but generally I think rereleasing the same product becomes somewhat redundant. I have nothing against Nintendo, but why keep redesigning something over and over when they could be focusing their energy elsewhere?

Well, yes, true... then again, I've kinda been noticing a... "tansition", if you will.

I mean, the GBSP had a flip screen, square-ish shape, and backlite. What did the DS look like? Exactly.

Yes, releasing a new one so soon seems a bit odd, but they're probably still coming up with some fantastic stuff, no? And perhaps the recent Micro is giving us a hinting towards the next handheld we'll see...

Maybe the redesign didn't require much energy?

You know, I think from now on, I'm not going to buy any Nintendo products when they come out, because they just release another version a year and a half later, and I end up buying that one too, and it's just a waste of money.

No no, don't buy any nintendo Handhelds when they just come out from now on.

I don't think they make a new model for the home consoles at all, though.

:/

I could be wrong though... *thinks*

The streamlined SNES. The top-loading NES. Yes, they do it for consoles too. :\

I don't know, but if you doubt me, I can go get pictures.

There was the Pikachu N64. I remember that. And...I don't think they did it for Gamecube, but I may be mistaken.

I don't really count the pikachu N64. I just, ya know, count it as another NES GBSP, ya know?

Okay, pictures. This was the original Super Nintendo (the one I bought):

This was the second model that came out later:

As for the top-loading NES:

They even made the controllers similar to SNES ones:

So yes, Nintendo has rereleased their systems NUMEROUS times. ><

Yeah, I know about those, but they're not numerous. :/

That's the nes and the snes. Both had one remake in their time.

Not, like, three or anything. 'Sides that, that was a long time ago.

N64 didn't have any remakes. The pikachu one was a limited edition promotional N64 for "Hey, you, Pikachu!" It's new design wasn't an improvement or anything, It just had pikachu on it; therefore, it was not a remake.

Gamecube didn't have any remakes. and I'm not talking about the panasonic one in Japan. Since it's not so well known and didn't come to America.

*shrug*

Is the Panasonic GC you refer to the one that was suppose to play DVDs, music, etc.?

Hey, if anything Kae, you can just call yourself an extreme Nintendo fanboy.

Sorry, but the only attatchment that can make me buy a prettier DS is a dual built in Toothbrush with brushing action so you can brush your teeth on the go! :thumb:

PS: And it could use it`s abilities to play some games.
