FFXII`s Changes

Postby Tommy » Tue Dec 27, 2005 8:58 am

Do you apreciate the change they made or do you loathe it?

I personally went with the second option. I think the battle system is fun but it should be a side game like FFCC was. Even though FFX had a tweaked system at least it was turnbased.

Tycho from Penny Arcade wrote:With the extended delays of the title, I had imagined that the rough trade they received at the hands of almost every person who saw it had sunk in and they had begun to realize the intense shame they'd bring upon themselves by continuing in this direction. That's not what happened. They're Final Fantasy, they don't have to worry about larger industry trends toward approachability and away from turn or phase based combat. They create trends, like a massive stellar body distorts local space.

This isn't just slavish devotion to tradition - the fact of the matter is that the system they had works better. It's more explicit regarding game events, and the player has greater control. You don't have to take my word for it - Dragon Quest VIII is awesome, and includes the same demo I played. There are two combat modes, the "Wait" mode being slightly less bad but not what you might call "good." Give it a whirl, the whole thing is trash. If for some reason you do enjoy it - and I've certainly done my best here to lower expectations - then rejoice. You must be the person they're trying to appeal to. It'll feel good for a while, until they determine that mass market annual "footy" titles are where it's at. Then you and I can sit together in a cafe and talk about those good times.

. . . the wheels are completely off the franchise. They don't have any idea what they did to create it, and then they let people who didn't understand it to begin with interpret it poorly. Their teenaged fumblings have destroyed it.

I think he sums up my feelings pretty well.

So FFXI has that same battle system. Heh, I thought FFXI was turnbased.

Whatever, I like this combat system but the other FF games were much better.

Unless you don`t have a PS2, I suggest you pick up a copy of Dragon Quest VIII. It has a FFXII demo and the game itself is good.

Huggles FFVI PS1 version along with FFV in it as well.

My point, Square is too busy re-realising their old titles then making new ones.

I like the rereleases, though...

I spent most of my time on Dawn of Souls just listening to the music...

Dawn of Souls is a very god game, but they are just working too much on remakes and sequels.

One of Square`s best games IMO, Romancing SaGa released recently for the PS2 is a remake of an SNES game. The remakes are good but they should make originals too.

I haven't played the demo, and haven't really been keeping much track either. Anyone care to fill me in on what these horrible changes are?

I think it`s fun, but it`s just two different.

You select attack from the menu and you can run around around during the battle. You have a WAIT bar next to your name. Once it fills up, you attack no matter how close to the enemy you are, once the bar is filled, your sword or other weapon swings.

When you cast a spell you have to back away from the enemy until you are far enough to cast it.

I see. So it's like Chrono Trigger meets Kingdom Hearts.

Um, I would say every FF game meets Kingdom Hearts but yeah, Chrono Trigger works too.

Romancing Saga was re-released? When? Is it just the first one? I really loved RS3... I hope they get around to that one. The first one didn't grab me like 3 did... The Saga games have that same sort of multi-linear aspect to them that Seiken Densetsu 3 had, and RS3 just played really well...

Um... I wish I had my PS2 so I could rent DQVIII and test out FFXII, but I don't...

Where`s your PS2?
I believe the remake for romancing saga is the trilogy combined, but I`m not sure. I`ll link you.

To me, this game is Unlimited SaGa if you take away every last flaw.
