Yup, I broke my old gamepad. Anyone got any recommendations as to which are really comfortable for long-term play?

Yeah buy a cheap Xbox controller and modify it.
I'm serious too my $10 generic Xbox controller, I didn't want to use my Microsoft ones, work better than any $30-$40 "Batarang" type controller that most PC gamepads are. It really wasn't that hard to do ya just have to have the stuff, but it's all cheap anyway.

I agree with Yojimbo. I played FFXI at my friend's house and uses an XBOX controller for ihs PC. It just plays awesome. Much better than all the cheap, generic PC controllers.

I would recommend Microsoft's own Sidewinder.

I'd recommend a good old Gravis GamePad Pro, but I don't know if those are even made anymore. (Sorry, that's all I can think of... ^_^; )

Link works fine for me. Well just google "Xbox controller mod" or some variation of that and you'll get it. It really is worth it plays much better than *any* PC gamepad I've ever used. The Sidewinder just doesn't count it for today's games because of the lack of analog sticks. As long as you have the screwdriver and the wire cutters the rest of the parts cost nothing anyway. And of course I'm sure you could borrow those from someone anyway.
