SEGA reviels new game... you're not gonna believe this

yep, you heard it first from us guys living in San Francisco, and the Metreon. http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/03/08/news_6120012.html

This may potentially be the most startling surprise from SEGA and Sonic Team to date... a "Sonic" game not starring the blue blur, but Shadow the Hedgehog. Also, apparently the ability to use some firearms (some SMG in the trailer).

There isn't much else information at this time, though if anyone finds any please post it here.

Edit: Ammendment, Shadow uses two firearms in the trailer. The first appears to be a glock, the second an MP5.

o.O Veeery interesting! I would never have suspected this.
Shadow has always been a personal favorite of mine. A game about him would certainly rock the house!!!!

The least they could do is write a Dreamcast version.

This is terrible.... Every Sonic game since Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast has been awful. And the SA was ok at best. Sonic has not translated well into 3-D. They've missed the part that made the originals so great. Speed!!!! I don't want to have to do some generic platform jumping or shooting. Or play with some other lame characters with equally lame abilities, that's not variety. Give me the old Sonic back please.

Going on the trailer only, it looks an awful lot like...uh...all the other 3D Sonic games on recent platforms. Other than projectile weapons, I don't see a whole lotta innovation here. I think it's obvious Sonic will never be a blockbuster hit again with the current game formula they've been using.

well, Shadow was never made to be a Sonic clone. I think that this is what this is all about. He was made to be a weapon of sorts.

This looks awful. Let's seeeee....

(mediocre)Sonic Heroes - everyone + Shadow + a gun = crap.

The only good 3D Sonic game was the first Sonic Adventure. And I'm a HUGE Sonic fan. Guah...

Sonic CD was the best of all of the Sonic games. Why can't they be more like that?!

I agree 1,000%.

Why can't they rerelease Sonic CD on one of the newer platforms?

They released the Genesis games on Gamecube...then on PS2.

What about Sonic CD?

And they could even add the option of the Japanese/American soundtrack.

Sega is run by idiots, apparently.

I love SEGA, no matter what.

to say that Sega is run by idiots is a great injustice. Sega isn't just all about Sonic. Sonic Team runs Sonic, thus it would be more apt to say that Sonic Team is run by idiots, and not even that. the word Idiot comes from a Greek word which means someone who wasn't caring for political affairs or the good of the public. Thus, it would be best just to say that Sonic Team is run by a bunch of morons.

However, despite correcting the errors in language, I do differ in my oppinion :)

Sonic Heroes is the same as old school except you can switch between characters. If someone already said that than whatever....

Sonic 3D blast for Sega was a classic.

Concerning the Sega bashing:

1. The reason Sonic CD was not released for the Gamecube was because Sonic Team was having great difficulty emulating it for the Gamecube technology. Therefore it was cut. Do not bash Sega for something like this without knowing the facts. Rumor is Sega is still attempting to release it on another Sonic collection....

2. Why is the video game community having a fallout over this game? The Sonic board I post on regularly has banned the game from discussion because of the heated arguements surrounding it. 50% of the community thinks it's the best thing since sliced cheese. 50% thinks it's gonna suck real bad. Why are we even judging the game when it's still far from release? Is it so hard to actually try PLAYING something before we bash it? Maybe it will actually be really GOOD.

3. For games that are supposed to be pretty horrible, SA1 and 2 were sure a blast when I played them....

Azier put ti well. ^^; I found Sonic Heroes to be a mediocre game, but I'm actually keeping an optimistic outlook on the new one. Well, mainly because it features Shadow and lots of large explosions, but honestly...>> We've seen nothing of the story line or the gameplay or how the new firearms will be incorperated into the game. What we have seen is the graphics, and in my opinion those are beautiful

I'll second that. I hear people complaining about them all the time, but I'd have to say that they're my favorite of the Sonic series. Their final battles are some of my most memorable gaming moments. Awesome.

The new Shadow game might be pretty darn good. He's still got all the moves from previous games, except now he's got a gun. I like guns. Maybe I'll like this.

On a side note, Sega is supposed to be working on a new title known as 'Sonic Gems'. It's rumored that the title may contain Sonic CD, as well as other rare titles. I can't confirm this yet though... (The title is definately being made though; it's just not clear what's going to be on it)

They should call it 'Sonic Emeralds'.....hahahehehoohohurrah....i slay myself. No seriously, Sonic Adventures I and II (which I played and beat over my friend`s house, yes both of them) seriously took the speed out of Sonic. that disapointed me but i found Shadow to be a pretty cool character and found the 2nd one deeply enjoyable.

When I was little, the first game series I got into was sonic but then i turned 8 and got my Ps1 (or was I 9? Well, I`m 14 now so you video game nerds who memorized the release dates to every system can tell me). Well, I lost interest in Sonic and moved on to games such as 'Crash Bandicoot' and 'Ape Escape' (the second one was deeply disapointing) and eventual those 'Final Fantasy' games.

Then my friend (whom I played and beat SA1 and 2 with) bought SonicHeroes. When i started playing Sonic H. (My friend disliked the game) it seriously reminded me of my childhood. It had the same levels in the second one which is my favorite out of the whole series. I just wished it had shorter levels and the same classic music. the Casino Level was downright aggravting.

Well, after my life story, you would probably figure there would be a point. I am glad Sonic isn`t the one with a gun because Sonic, to me, symbolizes children entertainment and Shadow represents comman entertainment for some odd reason. If you place a gun in Sonic`s hand, it just shows how violent our world has become. Sonic was always a role model for me as a kid no matter how fake and animated he was. I hope The Sonic Team doesn`t ruin the series by causing it to be extremely violent.

(( A note to the thread starter: How do you know this thing isn`t a hoax? I see stuff like this all the time )).

That was definately THE corniest thing I have ever stated.

Every reputable gaming site/mag has announced it's release, so it's no hoax...

Anyways, exactly how do the Adventure games ruin the 'speed' of Sonic? I personally thought he moved faster than ever.....

That's like Giving, Yoshi a gun. Or Mario a Thong, or the Princess a mustache.

It's just Dumb. And the fact that the previous Sonic games suck. With levels that seem like they're on cruise control, just keep pressing up and watch 800 animations of sonic getting from one place to another.

<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>
I agree with Yojimbo. All the Sonic Games on Dreamcast SUCK, in my worthless opinion. Sonic NEVER should of gone to 3D, sonic RIGHT NOW should be 2D like Viewtiful Joe. or Paper Mario or something.

In my opinion Sonic Adventure was a very unorganized game, I dind't know where to do, let alone did I care what happened or where I had to go. Not fun, boring, un-inspiriting, unmotivated. Sonic Team sucks and they should not be making anymore sonic games.

I'd say let Namco or Capcom make the next Sonic Game. Something new please. I mean did you guys see the demo video for Shadow?!

It's the same stupid blocky levels as the previous Sonic Adventure Games.
And that stupid Rail Grinding Idea is back.
Along with keep pressing up watch shadow/sonic bounce from a platform 800 stories tall to another platform and collect some rings,
fight some enemies who are brainless,
and anoying to kill btw due to it being 3D
then press up and watch the game take over and guide me throught the level by it'self. Can I play? When is it my turn?
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>

Can someone Please explain to me why Sonic Mega Collection didn't have a save feature for it's sonic games? What was the point of re-releasing hour long games without a save feature?

<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>

Sure. But Renting games costs time and money. And we've already given Sonic games chance after chance after chance and they all suck (my opinion once again)

So what happens when another game just like all the other previous sonic games comes out? Of course it's going to suck,
If a = b and b = c then a = c

So if Sonic Adventure Sucked
and Sonic Adventure 2 sucked
and Sonic Heroes sucked
and the sonic mega collection sucked
then... *counts on fingers* Shadow the Hedgehog will suck.
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>

It was the speed of the gameplay not sonic.

Notice in Sonic 1,2,3, 3D Sonic zipped through the levels and advanced to the next in only a few minutes. Well yes, With Sonic in the 3D world we now have a lot more crap to put up with.
Collecting rings becomes a chore, and the controls don't help, in certian situations collecting rings is more difficult than trying to vacume a 1X1 foot closet with the door closed and you inside with the vacume cleaner.
It's not the speed of sonic that's gotten slower, it's the speed of progression.

*shrugs*

Well, I enjoyed SA1 and 2 anyways. (And I wouldn't say they sucked either; flawed yes, sucked no.)

Sonic Heores WAS quite lousy though.

None the less if they are willing to shrink down Shadow's "gun" so that it's not as big as he is. I'll give it a try I guess. I am an old school fan of sonic, it was my first EVER video game. I'll always remember that.

I'm just angry that sonic is not getting the quality treatment that he deserves. so much more can be done. the Sonic games can be so much better.

THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH MACHINE GUNS!!!!! *blows Volt away* <--------- (Mega64 reference :P )

Seriously though, I can agree that none of the recent games have been up to par. Again, I love SA1 and 2, but it has always somewhat upset me that Mario's games allways seem to get much higher quality, and I believe if Sonic Team were to actually take the time to tweak the Sonic games to perfection, Sonic WOULDN'T be considered No.2 next to Mario.

Again, I love SA1, but it was far too glitchy and flawed. The English vioce acting was quite horrid, except for the voices of two characters. (And we have yet to see a glitchy horribly voiced Mario game).

SA2 was the example of a good game that wasn't executed to it's fullest, and parts of it felt like Sonic Team was just lazy.

Sonic Heroes was possibly the worst dissapointment when it comes to Sonic games in general.

The SA1 Director's Cut was horrible. None of the glitches were fixed, and the game had twice as many glitches as ever.

Did I mention the English voice actors need some serious acting lessons?

I never thought I'd say this, but if Nintendo ever aquires the rights to Sonic, I would probably actually rejoice. (Although I would salivate if Capcom were to ever make a Sonic game.)

The bottom line is that, if you forget for just a second about graphics and sound, the original four Sonic titles (1, 2, 3, and S&K) were the best as far as how fun they were to play and how solid the gaming was. Make that five, I guess. Sonic CD was nice. And once you get right down to it, Knuckles Chaotix was a worthy entry in the series. So six. Six games, the rest stink to high heaven.

Again, that's mainly because Sonic Team started getting lazy with their design.

It's the sad truth... but Sega has taken a drastic fall from one of the Top game designers in the world....

I am looking forward to the new Shadow game though...... I don't expect it to be amazingly spectaular, but part of me just has a soft spot for anti-heroes.

What is so sad is that Sonic used to be practically a national phenomenon, but now kids don't even know who he is.

You said it, though...they don't seem to want to take the time to upgrade the design to fit a 3D game environment.
