Resident Evil 4

So who just recently got this game, I got it two days ago and well I put aside World of Warcraft and Halo 2 just so I can dig right into this one. Yeah....it's that good, it's easily on par with Halo 2, GTA San Andreas and Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater-- though I know it won't receive as much attention as those aforementioned games.

I'm about four hours in, it's scary really scary, I mean I must say this game makes Silent Hill look like it should be on Super Nintendo (Well not entirely but almost!). The enemies are fast, smart and well...hard to kill. It's cool now, that you can buy items from a merchant giving this game more of a RPG feel and all. The graphics are absolutely awesome, next to Half Life 2 this is the best looking game on the market. They chose nothing but darker tones but it works, this game looks pretty photo-realistic at times.

So anyone else got this one yet, you can throw away any notions of what you thought of Resident Evil because THIS is the WAY the game was meant to be made.

With RE 4 here and Fire Emblem and the new Zelda game, Nintendo gamers can finally get some respect from those Xbox and PS2 elites. = )

Finally A horror game worth playing.

Dude this game will make you jump especially since you always have to be alert, come time for the cut-scene get prepared to interact and do something, not just watch cuz you can easily be killed by a falling boulder or burned if you don't do something quick.

I also love all the numerous references to horror movies, from Texas Chainsaw Massacre to The Village, to Invaders of the Body Snatcher and even the dogs have that whole look from The Thing.

Had it came out last year, I think only behind Half Life 2, this would've been the game of the year, it's that good.

Keep in mind though, it's bloody.....that guy with the chainsaw left me scarred...ahh!

Oh and when you're surrouned by twelve villagers when you least expect it....tell me at that point you're not scared. Heh.

This game is very pretty, with great environments that are, in a few ways, better than those in the Silent Hill games (The environments as characters with personality in SH are better, however. Not that they look more realistic, but that they have more significance) but I haven't found any character in any game that was quite as convincing as Heather from Silent Hill 3, so that crack about being on the Super Nintendo was lame. I have run across people a few times, during cut scenes of SH3, they walk by and think I'm watching a movie, but double take because they realize it's computer generated. That sort of double take hasn't happened that I can think of since the Final Fantasy movie... The polygon count is very high on the characters in RE4, and they are very well defined, but I find the lower-poly but better textured skin and faces on Heather more convincing. I find the characters in capcom games to be too fake... They look too perfect. The characters in SH have all had physical flaws that added to realism. That's something that Square-Enix and Capcom haven't quite figured out yet, particularly with their women.

As for the monsters, I don't find them all that special... The monsters in SH actually MEANT something... It wasn't just "Let's see what random mutation we can add... Ooh, I know, let's make its tongue really long, that's freaky. A lack of lips is scary." The monsters in SH are all psychogically significant, but then again RE was never meant to be about what's going on in someone's head, so they can't quite be compared... I prefer the pschological guilt trip or analysis game to the slasher zombie evil corporation game, though.

I still want to play this game, though... After all, it is VERY pretty...

I typically hated horror games, but there was just... something about this one.
I was finally able to get it today, and I must say, it scared me... at how amazing it is! :D

Keep in mind though, it's bloody.....that guy with the chainsaw left me scarred...ahh!

Actually, I was fearing that part.
But then it happened, and I was like "Oh... that was it?" :l
I guess it happened too fast for me to understand...

Oh and when you're surrouned by twelve villagers when you least expect it....tell me at that point you're not scared. Heh.

Actually, no, I wasn't. Just a bit frustrated, really. I got caught in that room with the shotgun, but I eventually decided to use my grenade and blew them all apart!

I've been playing for about an hour and just got to Chapter 1-2. That sudden part in the cutscene surprised me though. O_O

Dude are you serious? Just picked up the game today? That's awesome, I finally did too! Just had to after Halloween, right?

Anyways, know you, I was expecting this game to be way more scary. Granted I'm at 1-3 right now, but it's not freaky like Silent Hill and the past RE... maybe because I can actually control the character now. :P

Other than that and the dialogue, this game is simply awesome. I'm completely digging the whole weapon customization deal.

*goes back to playing*

I got the PS2 version the day it came out. It looks and plays exactly like the Gamecube version and has some additional extras. The only difference between the two, minus the added bonuses, are the cutscenes aren't realtime which is barely noticeable.

The game rocks nothing more to say there.

Um, I got to 1-2 and took it back. Not cuz it's scary, but right now wasn't a good time for it, being I have a younger brother (5) who likes to watch the games with me. Still, I kept the save file, so maybe someday I'll get back to.

Yeah, I'm wierd. >_>

Hmmm... I beat RE 4 a while ago... I would have to say that Silent Hill 3 is much creepier though. RE 4 is like a good horror/ Action title... Silent Hill 3 is just plain screwed up, and that is why i like them both though. they are in no way similar other than they both deal with the horror genre. Yeah, RE 4 is one of the best games that I have played in a while other than SH 3 on my PC. I wold have to say that SH 3 on my PC also looks much more realistic than RE 4.

This is how I play it:

- at night
- preferrably when it's raining or storming outside
- turn off all the lights
- by myself

YEAH. :)

RE4 is very nice. If you want to save bullets you can just run around with the knife, and when the villagers come up close, duck their attacks and slash their legs at the same time. Then when they get stunned from the pain, press the Action button to do the roundhouse kick.

If you see the chainsaw wielding guys switch back to the shotgun .. I tried to save ammo once and used the pistol on him. He just shrugged it off ...

When you use the shotgun wait till he closes up and have him have it in the face. And don't turn your back on him until he's dead. I made that mistake once and heard a chainsaw powering up behind me. Then he took my head off. Nice. :)

To be honest I am very early into the game (study, World of Warcraft, and Guild Wars keeping me busy), but I keep experimenting with ways to take out the enemies. That's my idea of fun. HAHAH.

Whoa. Played this today. I'm completely blown away. It's a white knuckle ride that doesn't even let up, esp. with the fact you're always watching your six to make sure some quasi-zombimatized Martha Stewart isn't packing a sythe into your kidneys. Crazy stuff.

There's really no need to conserve ammo except at the very start the first chapter and then after chapter five. Just go for the obligatory headshots and roundhouse kicks in the beginning for the first 20-30 minutes. After chapter five I started noticing that I was regularly running low. I always had "just" enough to get by usually but with the hordes of the hardest enemies yet and the speed they come at you have to worry about ammo usage. Oh and don't bother upgrading weapons until you to get to chapter three or so when the Black Tail, Riot Shotgun, and Semi-auto Rifle are availible.

I played that game and when I first played it I was mad! The first enemy I met in the game(The one in the house).Yo did you guys know that HE CURSES YOU OUT IN SPANISH? He says a bunch of bad things which a christian isnt supposed to say but I did all the things a spiritual warrior was supposed to do.I BLASTED THAT SUCKER!Even when it was on the floor dead I still shot it.Bad because there was more enemies outside. You know what helps? If you witness to these virtual occultic people.I was quoting John 3:16 real loud and saying there going to hell for false worship and shooting them with my shotgun.(Hopefully I dont offend anyone here...but its true,I did say it...those people in that game need Jesus in their life)I find the game much more fun that way

Some people take videogames way to far...and slowly make the laws worse for the rest of us....ITS JUST A GAME PEOPLE. THEY ARE PIXILS AND HAVE NO SOULS. On top of that...even if you take your logic seriously...what is Christian about blowing peoples heads off?

Yes you're gonna shove Jesus down their virtual throats with 20 ought buckshot.:eyeroll: Putting aside that it's a virtual world, which I have no qualms killing anything in, they're infected with a parasite so they really don't have any control over what they do moral or no.

Hiya!

Just had to add my own postie to the thread. RE4 rocked my face off (I got it pretty much when it was released in Canada, within a week or so). It was incredible graphically, with a killer (pun might have been intended) ;) set of enemies, and the "act in the cut-scenes or die" additions are so very nicely done.

With the exception of Dead Aim, I've played every RE title out there, and this one takes the cake so far. Unfortunately, this game is what should have been done every other time. I think a re-do of RE:2 is in order, using this engine, or better. Think how truly ghastly it would be to literally control a character in an entire CITY of zombies...All real time, no loads, and you can be crushed or ganged (or shot by Umbrella hit squads? ) at any time? Sounds like the best would just get better!

This game actually captured the one element that every other RE title has missed (with the exception of Nemesis)...to be afraid is not about being startled, it's about genuinely fearing something. It's not about "ooh, how messed up is THAT?", it's about "I'mgonnadie, I'mgonnadie!!! Noooo!", or a similar fear that you'll be screaming that if you open the next door, take the shiny key off the desk, etc.

Nemesis rocked that way too, cause the only safe place you had was the save room, and if he'd chased you that far, the soothing "everything's safe" music wouldn't play...it was terrifying, especially when you were down to half a mag in your handgun, and your dinky toy knife (if you hadn't ditched it).

Anyways, I'm way off from RE4...just wanted to say that it ROCKS!! Play it now, even if you've never played a Survival Horror game before.

Yup, that was Anderson. I'm glad that my sense of humor was appreciated.

On topic.
I just beat the game on pro. dificulty... Man, the
Krauser and "It" boss fights were actually scary this time around, lol. I thought that "it" was especially difficult, since the striker doesn't have very much stopping power against "It". Then with Krauser I died about ten times during the final part untill I whipped out my knife and just had at his face till he died. I thought it was kind of funny that it was easier to kill him with a knife than with a magnum, Krauser just likes melee fighting, I guess. :eyebrow: The regenerators were scarier too. I think it was because they did more damage this time around, they could have also been moving faster, but I didn't have any normal mode saves to check with.
I'm going to have fun using the Handcannon with pro. mode. Though RE4's one of those games where its more fun to wait a month or so between new games, so it could be awhile before I enjoy the fruit of my efforts. :P

Can you guys imagine:
RE4 on the Revolution.

I mean, think about it. The one thing i had a problem with was getting use to aiming and knife fights (especially the fact that you couldn't move while using it), so with the Revo controller, just imagine:

Use analog to move, whip out the controller, point, fire, press a button to bring out the knife, move in with the analog, swing the controller, step back, swing again to stab, etc...

Man, now THAT would be awesome. >:D

RE 4 is a brilliant game. Some of the aspects were kind of lame ("No thanks, BRO!"), but all around the best game of '05 IMO.

Also, the Handcannon is no fun. If you don't upgrade it with the exclusive, it makes a decent replacement for a magnum (but has horrible capacity). I guess it's cool to play with it once, same with Chicago Typewriter. But it ruins the game. Want a fun game? Use the Handgun, Shotgun, bolt-action rifle and the TMP as your only weapons for the entire game. That's fun, especially on pro. BTW, you can kill U3 ('It') with 200 shots from the TMP. Just trap him behind a gate and unload. He won't have enough time to break the gate down. Just keep firing.

Nobody asked this, but when I talk about RE4, I like to talk about weapons preferences. My weapons 'dream team' is the Blacktail, Riot Gun, .223 Semi-auto rifle, and the Killer7. It's more than enough to get you through the whole game. I mean, the Blacktail is the best in every aspect except firepower (2nd to the Red9) of the handguns. Riot Gun has the best firepower for the shotguns, too. It only lacks the firing speed and capacity of the Striker, but it doesn't matter because the Striker is garbage. There's nothing not to like about the rifle; it has insane firing speed with the exclusive. The Killer7 isn't the best magnum in the game, I'm well aware. It has a max firepower of 35 if I remember correct, which is nothing compared to the Broken Butterfly's insane 50. It's just a matter of preference for me, and I hate revolvers, so I use the Killer7.

What are you guys' weapons 'dream teams'?

Yeah, just knife one guy in the legs/head, then kick. A well-placed kick can hit a bunch of guys at once, saving ammo. Same holds true for flash grenades.
