Has anyone been keeping track of this game, lately?

Yeah, you may be thinking what I was thinking when I first heard of the game.... Millitary GTA clone from Lucasarts, it's gonna' flop.

But, wait, this game is showing promise to be one the first great games of '05.

Here's some thing that caught my eye about the game:

-You can hi-jack any vechnicle you see (Tank, Choppers, and all)
-Battlefield 1942 and GTA style freedom
-Some of the best runnning graphics on the PS2 (Also, coming to X-box)
-Jumping between difference factions in the game (Russia, Korea, China)

What do you guys think?

Mercenaries looks to be an awesome game. I aready read about it in Game Informer and I automatically wanted it. The problem... no PS2 or X-Box for me... :(

Thanks for the links LA,

The game looks promising, the free roam feeling with the ability to put virtually every weapon and vehicle you see to good use; are appealing. But for me, the real test is the feeling. How smooth the transitions are, how easy it is to manipulate the various machines and what kind of incentive there is for replay will make or break a game like this. I could see something like this being extremely fun with a multiplayer option.

I am definitely still going to keep my eye on this one.

I'll deffinetly be picking this one up I've been following it for awhile. I hope they can keep a smooth transition for the shooting, driving, and other elements. If they controls are spot on and there are is no graphical slowdown then that's a good sign.

Picked this game up, yesterday. I must say.... I am quite impressed, looks like Lucas Arts *might* be coming around. This game is flat-out great! I'm having a blast explorin’ (and explodin’) North Korea.

First impressions outline:

Spiffy

- The Controls are solid. Most of the vehicles control excellently.

- Awesome explosions, some of the best.

- Tons of different Air-strikes (10+), vehicles (60+), and weapons.

- If your wondering if you can do something.... Nine times out of ten, you can.

- Plenty of Challenge and side quests

- Good mission variety

- Well-done musical score

- Backseat Story

- The game doesn't get to serious and has a good sense of humor

- Some Drop-jaw effects and graphics

- Great frame rate on the X-box

Iffy

-Backseat Story

-AI is decent. Enemies are very aggressive and sometimes idiotic/suicidal. Your allies can get in the way and don’t help much.

-Seems somewhat rush. This is noticeable in the AI and Story, but the graphics seem to lack polish in some areas (only a minor complaint for detail freak). Still, this game is on the PS 2 and X-box, so the graphics can’t be polished like Resident Evil 4 or Metal Gear Solid 3.

-Tanks are awkward to drive and are slow.

-Some contracts (missions) can call for many attempts and lend to frustration

All in all, the game’s great. Gamspy gave it a 5/5 and IGN a 9.1/10

So, any one else got it, yet?

Note: No, I haven't play GTA and I don't care too. I'll take military over those annoying gangs any day of the week.

saw an article on it on pcgamer magazine. But i don't remember if it was just an AD. Is it for PC as well? If it is id buy it. And it has the clone troopers only? I really dislike the "new" starwars stuff, it would be nice if they had stormtroopers, scouttroopers, and etc

wait. oh my gosh lol i was thinking of another starwars game ROFL

Yeah, that's Republic Commando you're thinking of.... which also looks awesome. It's coming march for the X-box and PC.

Although it is based on the "new" Star Wars... it seems to be taking a more serious and darker tone. I recommend checking out this offical site: http://www.lucasarts.com/games/swrepubliccommando/ it's got a really awesome trailer and info on the weapons 'n such.

I'm not entirely sure..... but, I think.... (from what I've played.)

The soldiers of each faction speak their language and no English (except the HQ guard). For the soldiers it sounds right. Though, it could be faked. I haven’t heard any repeating sounds. When you visit an HQ to accept a mission, the leader of the group will speak English, but chat with his soldier in the room in their language. For the South Korean task force in NK, their leader is a retired American CIA. When he speaks Korean, the voice actor sounds like he's having a hard time and speaking slow. So, maybe it is real.

Interestingly, each of the three playable characters understands a different language aside form English. Chris, the character I choose, understands Korean. So, when the CIA dude and the South Koreans soldier are chatting, subtitles appear at the bottom of the screen.

Note: I am in no way fluent or really familiar with Chinese, Korean, or Russian (the three factions in the game). lol. That being said… I am curious, is there a difference in dialect between North and South Korean?

Btw, there are some funny "Star Wars" reference jokes in the game.
