1. I can think of 2 games this happend... Mario RPG (only he was woken by toad instead of his mother) and Chrono Trigger. Am I missing something? I think in "Breath of Fire" he is asleep when the town burns down...
2. This does NOT happen in Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6 (well, I guess everything... Um... Nevermind), This happened in Breath of Fire, and in a few others.
3. Heheheh...
4. Once again, this is a Chrono Trigger thing... A few others as well. It's true. This is a common, but not universal, theme in Japanese RPGs.
5. The only character in FF7 who was under 20 (on the team, I mean) was Yuffie. Aeris is 22, I think Tifa is 20, and Cloud is 21... Barret's even older than them, I'm guessing... THen there's vincent... This one in particular annoys me because this is what Adam Sessler whined about in reference to Japanese RPGs (besides the fact he doesn't have enough patience to play through them) It's just not as common as he thinks, and as other seem to...
6. This stereotype is rather accurate, but not just about Japanese RPGs, but about a lot of american movies and stories (and brittish and Canadian too) The single parent thing is just done all the time...
7. Hmm... I can't argue with that... I mean, there is Cloud Strife and Tifa Lockhart, but they're not brought up much in the game (the names I mean.)
8. One big exception to this: Final Fantasy Tactics... Everyone is given names... There is a big random name generator that gives every little peon a name. I'm sure there are more... Final Fantasy 5, I believe, gave a name to Butz's mom.
9. Not always every item, but there is almost always at least a few of those items in every game. That, in itself, doesn't mean much.
10. This one is crap. It's just not true... I mean, Tidus lived in a big technological d... Er, City... Squall and Rinoa lived in a garden (which is very technological.) Let's not even get into Cloud and his crew.
11. This could also be called the "Samus Aran" rule or the "Solid Snake" rule. Or the "every video game sequal that has power building and carries on from a previous game, with the exception of .hack" rule.
12. ? I can't think of anything to counter that one right off hand, because I can't think of what games I've played where the character used to be rich. I mean, there's the 4 knights from Chrono Cross... And they all stay rich. Also, that bratty little girl stays bratty... I hated her... Anyhow
13. Nah, it's just Cloud, Chrono, and that one guy (you know, from Seiken Densetsu 2 who you have to name yourself) It's not a universal thing... Laguna and Squall, for instance, didn't have high hair, neither did Tidus. Celes may have had bangs, and Locke... He had normal hair. So this isn't really a rule. It's just that spiky tall hair is common in anime and games because the "hair chunks" are an easy way to draw hair. It's impossible to draw strands and animate them.
14. Hahahahaha! Only one game I can think of where that's not true... Zelda... You'll get in trouble stealing from someone in Zelda.
15. a. Hmm... That's in 2 games I can think of, but not all
b. the FIRST HALF applies to Yuna...
c. Lulu doesn't have any deformities!! Um Sorry
d. Is auron "gothy"? Or "achingly beautiful" for that matter?
e. Kimahri
f. Hmm... I can't think of where this would have come from...
g.
Oh forget it... This list is unfair, but also untrue in the way it combines things. Unfair because it has too many things on the list... I mean you have to do something to move the characters along...
16. I wouldnt' call... That guy from FFX a pretty boy...
Hmm... I'll go through the rest of these later, but #41... Geez... What a cheap shot. I should expect that from a fan work like this, though. Much better than finding something like that on Apple's website...
