What is your fav RPG and why?

The RPGs we're talking here can be anywhere from Golden Sun to Harvest Moon. My fav would have to be Harvest Moon64 because it's got decent graphics for the times, memorable chars, I like farming, and it's hard but not impossibly hard like a lot of RPGs. Mind you, I have not gotten the best ending yet, but I will be working on it...right after I finish training up my Zelda/Sheik on Melee.
Fav fighting RPG goes to Skies of Arcadia, though I was disappointed with the final battle. Can't have everything I suppose...apart from that and one scene, the game rocked! K, you peeps' turn. Oh, and fav char from the RPG too.

chrono trigger and chrono cross were definatly my favorites. the plot was awesome in both games, the characters were great, the battle system was awesome... AWESOME game.

my all time fav is Shining Force 1&2 for the genesis, those are the games that started turn-based stratagy RPGs in the first place and built in me a deep love for 16bit sprites..........
honorable mention goes out to Phantasy Star 3 (genesis)........since that game was so cool, so difficult, and so long, it kept me out of trouble during 8th grade when i probably would have been up to no good otherwise.........
Chrono Cross was off the hook as well.....(Skies of Arcadia i still need to play....got the dreamcast version, just need to take the time to play it)

So many to choose! Uh uh uh *sweats profusely* hmmm....
FFVI/III for making people in America take RPG's seriously. The first console RPG with an actual mature storyline, hands down one of the best casts of character ever, and the awesome music.
Chrono Trigger gets an honorable mention as well. For it's awesome battle system that made it actually fun to fight, the original storyline, and for some of the quirkiest most memorable characters.

oh this is a toughie...
FF7 simply cause its a classic and it has one of the best magic systems (Materia) I've seen in quite some time!
FF Tactics cause its simple to get into and has a fair bit of depth with the laws and class switching.
Shining Force 2 as it was one of the first RPGs I ever played! Slade and Peter are amazing in it.
Tales of Phantasia cause it has a unique battle system, a pretty good story and lots of levelling up. Cool side quests too (Moria Gallery anyone? the extra 10 levels?)
Adventures of Alundra, had excellent puzzles in it.

I LOVED FFVII! The materia was a very simple yet effective way of junctioning abilities and such to your character.

Final Fantasy VII - Best game I've ever played because the storyline is so good
Xenosaga -Another one that's great with a storyline

Beyond Oasis for the Genesis. A rare yet awesome Action RPG. Shining Force 1&2 are excellent, too, but I can't get my hands one either...too expensive. Anyone know where I can get them cheap?

The Final Fantasy games are awesome, never got into them personally though. Golden Sun and Sword of Mana were as close as I got.
Cool avatar btw, HeavensTek, brings back memories of the Megaman sagas...
*veers back on subject* Apologies, apologies...
My fav char from HM64 was, of course, the girl my char married: Ellie.
Fav from Skies of Arcadia would be Fina, honorable mentions to Vyse and Gilder though (that gun attack rocked!) it was close. I'm just much more of a magic wielder in RPGs, than a brute force type, and she's so sweet and naive.

Top 3 in no particular order:
FFVII - The only FF I've played, however it did take me a bit to adapt to it.
Deux Ex - The original was as much, if not more, RPG as it was FPS. Multiple solutions rocks!
Morrowind - Huge, Free-roaming, flexable... and downright pretty as a picture.
Honorable mention (though I'm still not finished, and it's got some slight issues) - Arx Fatalis.... come-on, you can make pies for crying out loud, how cool is that?
Sadly I've come up short with most RPGs, and even more so with Console ones....
Oh, forgot about Arcanum, Fallout, Anachronox, Icewind Dale.... hmm... can I have a few weeks to think about this?

Suikoden II - Took the shining premises of the first one and doubled it, making a much more rounded game. The soundtrack wasn't as good but the storyline was so much better and I love those fast-paced fights.
Final Fantasy VI - In my eyes, the epitome of Final Fantasy...this game's grace was the beautiful musical composition, lovely characters and tons of secrets. When I think FF I think this game.
Chrono Trigger - Yes, another sprite-based rpg, CT rocked with it's time traveling concept, unique designs by Akira Toriyama. And back in the day, multiple endings was a big deal.
Other mentions are Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, Shadowforce, Xenogears and Baldurs Gate 2.

I didn't think there were RPG fans that existed that didn't like CR. I haven't found one yet that played it and didn't like it. Back when we had FFVI, Chrono Trigger, and Super Mario RPG we were in SNES RPG heaven.

Right now ~ My favorite RPG is Final Fantasy VIII ...although I'm just starting.
Chrono Trigger was my favorite before, along with Super Mario RPG. Paper Mario was great, I just didn't really like having to switch party members during battle, and the small numbers (1 damage never really excited me).
I want to get Skies of Arcadia Legends for GC though. It looks like a good buy. *tramps on over to eBay*

My favorite is the original Final Fantasy, because it's what really got me started on RPG's. I also like FF2 (SNES--I can never remember the actual number for the Japanese version), and yes! I like Chrono Trigger too! Awesome game. I just finished Chrono Cross (two of the endings at least) and enjoyed that as well. Favorite character is Rydia from FF2, summoners are just cool.

Oh how could I totally forget about Chrono Cross, I've listened to many game soundtracks and I still think that game has one of the greatest compositions ever. I loved how the game tied in to my favorite game ever: Chrono Trigger.
Another rpg I would like to mention is Valkrie Profile...it was an underated game that came out on PSX. I still haven't played Tales of Symphonia yet--grrr...

My favorite console RPG is Phantasy Star Online for the Sega Dreamcast. It was the first big online console RPG, laying the groundwork for those that would follow. I like the action-oriented approach of the game, as well as the high level of character customization (as opposed to playing through the story of a pre-made character). The MAG system added an element of "pet" management that actually made a difference in the game, as well as adding a personal touch to your character.
Unfortunately I didn't keep up to the series when it moved to Gamecube, since I don't own one. Fortunately, there is talk of a new game (Phantasy Star Universe) that will be released in late 2005 for...the PS2 (and not Lamecube
)! Hopefully that will happen, so that I can get my PSO fix once again.

As of now, I really like Final Fantasy X. In my opinion, that is best of the Final Fantasy Series so far. Mainly because I believe it mastered the linear RPG style with an effective storyline and strong characters.
I like Suikoden III a lot, and it makes me wish I have heard about this series earlier. (Arrgh, with the prices for Suikoden I and II so high, I will never get to play them.) Either way, I like how the Suikoden mythology handles political and cultural conflicts with an effective game style. Plus, I like the anime style character 3D models.
Dark Cloud 2 also gets on my favorite list. Being an engineer, I like to tweak and fiddle with gadgets. If you have that type of personality, you will understand why Dark Cloud 2 is so appealing (i.e. building weapons, modifying your little mecha, Steve, etc.) Plus, I like the cell-shading art style of the game.

Yeah, Yasunori Mitsuda is the composer. He also did the Xenogears and Xenosaga Episode 1 soundtracks. He is very talented.
I also like Chrono Cross... even more than Chrono Trigger. I guess I am in the small minority there.
Well, that is all I can think up for now.

Favorite RPG's. =3 Easy.
FF9: Not a crowd favorite, as I've regretfully learned, but FF9 was the first of the Final Fantasy series I played, and I fell in love with it. The characters and how they develop throughout the story drew me in and kept me playing throughout the entire game. I kept going especially for Vivi and Kuja The dungeons were well put together (Fossil Roo - I loved it and hated it), not too easy, yet not impossibly hard either. It surpasses FF7 in my eyes.
Grandia II: Grandia II had the best battle system of any RPG I've ever played, hands down. The story, I admit, was a tad cliche, but the plot twists were brilliant in a sort of odd way, and I am a raving Melfice fangirl. And Ryuudo amused me to no end. o.o

My favorite RPG is probably Final Fantasy 6, but the two Chrono Games tie for second. Third place goes to Seiken Densetsu 3 which is an Action RPG but it was to action what the active time battle system was to the turn based system... It was action, but it was sorta turn based too... That aspect seemed to annoy many fans expecting another "Secret of Mana" but I found it to be the ultimate fighting system for any ARPG.
Other goodies include most of the Final Fantasy games, and some lesser known games... I was quite fond of Treasure Hunter G, though I played an incomplete translation that didn't go past about 3 hours in the game... I also loved Uncharted Waters 2: New Horizens (or was it the other way around? New Horizens 2: Uncharted waters?) I usually cheated to get a lot of money, though...It's a hard game! Um... Also, I loved Harvest Moon (the first one only... I played the Gameboy one and it blew big pink and purple chunks of rotting tuna and gasoline soaked cotton balls lit with the flames of a thousand dark wizards... It sucked... Wasn't too willing to try out the other ones after that) and, oooh, who could forget the classic SD2, known to most of you as "Secret of Mana"
In closing, most of the best games were on Super Famicom...
Oh, that reminds me... I loved "Sailormoon: Another Story" though it was rather a mediocre game... it was just great as an addition to the story.
Though the story was rather childish, "Big Sky Troopers" was quite fun. I love the fact that advertising would kill the aliens... Lucas Arts had some weird games... Like this one called "Star Wars" something-rather... Hehehehe
I could go on... I loved RPG's... Ooh, need to mention one more: Romancing Saga 3 (the 6th game in the Saga Series) It was the pinnacle of the series, much like FF6 was the pinnacle of the Final Fantasy series... I actually found the rest of the games (except Romancing Saga 2, Saga Frontier 2, and Unlimited Saga, which I haven't played) to be rather mediocre... Saga 3 (known in the US, unfortunately, as "Final Fantasy Legend") was ok...

my favorites are ff8, im the crazy one who loved the junctioning system, also the card game owned
and seiken densetsu 3, there were so many possible sub storylines with this, you could play it like a bajillion times and have different events happen, and the class changes own

I liked FF8 a lot. It had a realistic-yet-not anime-ish world that would ROCK to live in. Plus, it gave us the gunblade. Best FF weapon ever.
Xenosaga looks like an anime, which is a big reason why I bought it. The Ether and skill systems are a little involved for my tastes, but the graphics are beautiful and the story is awesome.
How can I not mention Paper Mario. If you still have a Nintendo 64, find this game. NOW. It's badge system was like Materia Lite, which is a big plus. It was simple. Simply awesome.
Kingdom Hearts is a PS2 must-own. The story grabs you and doesn't let go, the characters are memorable, the stat system is blessedly simple, it uses real-time action-game fighting, and incorporates the classic menu-style well. Plus...the Keyblade. How anyone can see Kingdom Hearts and not wish they had a Keyblade is beyond me. Someday I'm going to build Oblivion.
I want to try Dark Cloud 2. It looks great.

Hmm...
I love the Harvest Moon games (except the ones on gameboy--ick!!
)
The Secret (or Legend? I can't remember) of Mana was pretty good too. I really liked that the battles was in real time as opposed to turn-based. The pet raising feature was a nice addition too.
FF7 is my first FF game and its cool. I heard that some people didnt like its graphics but I think its decent. I would agree that the Materia system is nice as well. But I'm still working on that game...
Paper Mario was okay but to me it doesnt have much replay value.

Yeah I'm another wierdo who likes Harvest Moon. There's something about planting corn and wooing farmgirls that attracts me to the game.
I also really liked Secret of Mana, but it's been forever and a day since I played it last. It's sequel Legend of Mana on the other hand sucked pretty bad as I can remember.

The game we call "Secret of Mana" is game two. The game called "Legend of Mana" is game four. Too bad you missed out on the best game in the series, part three "Seiken Densetsu 3"
That game was the best... The remake of SD1, known in the US as "Sword of Mana" is decent but still vastly inferior to SD3.
I agree with you on SD4... It was lame. No exploration, no real plot... It felt way too cartoony. It's like "ooh, we got all this space and stuff on the CD, let's up the cute factor and spend all of our development money on incredibly detailed 2d animation rather than game mechanics and plot! That's the way to go!" when it came to fight, your characters weren't so detailed anymore... two frame animations, only two directions, very linear battlefields... I don't even want to see that "Build your own world map!" thing again... Horrible...
