I've played the Xs, but only a bit. VII is my favorite, partly because I own it. And they say it's overrated? Wheres all the overrated-ness? I guess I missed it. Hey, Sephiroth was... is! still awsome. I want to get the older Final Fantasies, like the ones do Super Nintendo, for GBA. That would awsome.

I say it is overrated because it was the first FF that got people hooked, and people automatically said it was the best with characters and stuff and yadda yadda

Actually I don't completely remember why. Ask me in like a week and i'll remember

As my first avatar probably gave away...FFVII is my personal favorite. It's the one I like best, and I've only played half of IV, VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2, and Tactics. I'm not in a position to say which FF I think is the best, cause I haven't even tried all of them yet. I do know I will most likely never play XI, which makes me very mad...I think the decision to take the Franchise into Online gaming was a bad move....especially since it'll never have a definite conclusion, which Final Fantasies generally require.

And like rocklobster, FFVII was the first RPG I ever played. As such, yes, it has some nostalgic value to me, but honestly, no game in the history of ever has caused such an emotional response in me. I'll just say that I have never hated anything virtual before Sephiroth, or after....just him :)

I was mad, cause I had grinded my way to 99 with my main troupe by Junon Harbor in Disc 1, which included Cloud, Aeris, and Yuffie. When she died, I literally shut off the game and refused to play for months.

*Yes, I'm sad. But it's true so . . . )

Anyway, that's my take. I like each of the others I'd mentioned, just none quite as much as VII. Overrated? Only by those who don't appreciate it. *shrug* Those who do appreciate it aren't overrating it at all, since one's ratings are based on one's personal preferences. And I did like IV, so I'm not just a slave to new graphics. But personally, I'd LOVE for Square to remake VII for the PS3. I might die if they did :D

I think it might be valid to say FFVII was overrated... primarily because it is rated so ridiculously high. While I still feel it is definitely on the top tier of games in the series, I agree that the immense devotion some people have for it is too much.

That's an interesting position I hadn't considered. Aside, the "final" part of the name comes from the fact that when the first game was made, Square would have gone under if it didn't sell well... and we all know what happened.

For me, my favorite is FF8 hands down. It has been since I played through it (and subsequently replayed it three or four more times), and I think it will be for a long time to come.

I just love that game.

Kkun: Agreed. FFVIII was an excellent RPG.

The storyline IMO:

Disc 1: Okay.
Disc 2: Meh, this plot is kinda boring.
Disc 3: WHOA! This is the best storyline ever in any RPG!
Disc 4: Nice ending.

An FVIII-2 or PS3 remake would make me full of joy.

Just note, FFVIII is not really a good game for first-time RPG players. This was my third RPG ever and I just played it through like a normal RPG. Do not! The Junction system is alot different than most FFs.

I agree, I really thought FFX's system of levelling was perfect. Each character started out with unique abilities, but by the end you could customize them. This was the perfect balance between 7/8 (where aside from Limit Breaks every character was basically identical) and 9 (where every character was unique, but you couldn't have Vivi be a healer in a pinch).

Though I doubt the ending would change anyone's mind. It is actually my primary disappointment with the storyline of that game.

It had a LONG ending... -.-

I had the opposite opinion. I thought the storyline of 6 was really good, it was just the gameplay that turned me off to it.

Shao wrote:And they say it's overrated? Wheres all the overrated-ness? I guess I missed it.

The fact that almost every video game site/magazine has rated FF7 as the "best RPG of all time" (some even have gone so far as to say it's the best video game of all time). I'd say that qualifies as overrated.

For the record, FF7 is the game that got me into RPGs, and I really like it. But best video game of all time? Not by a long shot. Not even the best RPG (too many translation errors for that...seriously, good grammar and spelling go a long way...). It's good. But there are so many better games.

We never said of all video games, Nate, we meant of all FFs. I can admit this is the best FF but not the best RPG.

I liked FFX-2 since they brought back the job system and it was still good but I don`t like how everyone was a girl and it was like watching Charlie`s Angels. I also hated how you get a sexy outfit and perform a wicked cool attack.

In FFX-2 you can get a good ending or a bad ending. If you press the O button multiple times in the farplane Yuna will whistle for Tidus and later when you beat he
Comes back and everybody lives happily ever after.
It was an awesome ending, with awesome gameplay but the girlish feel and crappy lines moved this game froman 8 to a 6 in IMo on the scale of one to 10.

The first song that comes to mind is "Independent Women Part I" by Destiny's Child. That would have been a great song to put on the FFX-2 soundtrack.
Simple arithmetic:
FF7 + World War II games = overrated
freedom + things we're lucky to have = taken for granted
manga + anime = a very happy person
Salvation + Jesus' Sacrifice = Eternal Life
a village - its idiot = a lot of smart people
(more to come)

Words of wisdom:
"Who's more foolish: the fool or the fool who follows him?" - Obi Wan Kenobi

"Sometimes Justice is a (insert item here)!" - Kato Kaelin

"You wouldn't lie to a judge with a baseball bat, would you?" - Extreme Akim

"For as low as you go, ask God to take you that high." - Tyler Perry

"I had the right to remain silent...I just didn't have the ability." - Ron White

"Your trademark is stupidity!" - Mr. T

"Your eyes can deceive you, don't trust them." - Obi Wan Kenobi

"If you can't be good, be good at it." - my uncle
(more to come)

I don't think you quite understood him. He wasn't attacking your statements, he was just showing that how because people call FFVII the best video game of all time it would qualify as over-rated. Actually, in that post he didn't even address which FF he thought was best (and I don't remember if he stated his vote).

Tom Dincht wrote:In FFX-2 you can get a good ending or a bad ending.

The less linear system worked well, in my mind. However, I am rather irked at how the good/bad ending is based on something so pointless as pressing X at a given time. Why would you ever do this normally? Without that addition, the ending would be rather miserable.

I realize this is entirely opinion, but I wouldn't have liked that on the sound track. Actually, I wasn't too fond of the sound track overall.

6 people felt the love. That is an awesome vieogame but I`d prefer 8,7, and 10 over it without question.

Actaully Uc, if you get 100% od the Missions cleared and press the x button at the Farplane then you get the Perfect Ending which has one extra scene at Zanarkand. The scene isn`t worth getting 100%, but what the heck, getting 100% is fun.

FFX-2 is fun all the time when alot of other FF games get boring. However, FFX-2`s theme is too fun. XD

Eh, it was fairly fun. I enjoyed it less once I'd mastered the dress spheres I actually wanted to use, and I felt obligated not to waste any AP. Frankly, it isn't as fun beating down enemies in Lady Luck as it is with pointed metal objects.

There are three levels of ending (not counting the bad one that you get if Shuyin fires Vegnagun... or so I hear, as he lasted a few rounds in my game). The first occurs simply by beating the game. What I was referring to was the second, which requires pressing X at two different times on the Farplane (once midway through, then at the end). You described the perfect ending, which adds a scene on to the previous two.

I have no problems with the idea of a "Perfect" ending. But I don't see any reason a normal person would press X at those times ordinarily.

Actually, the "Firing Vengagun" ending happens if you LOSE the battle.

I think it was press O at the Farplane. To be safe, I pressed X and O rapidly.

um, FX-2 is on my bottom 3 list of FF games. I like FF6 better overall but FFX-2 was fun since it revolved more around gameplay than plot which every other FF fails to do.

If you really want to know the three that come before it.
1.FF7
2.FF8
3.FF10
4.FF9!

I know you were kidding, but for the record FF9 is WAAAY better than X-2 in my nook.

X in the American version, O in the Japanese one (they're equivalent).

Tom Dincht wrote:Actually, the "Firing Vengagun" ending happens if you LOSE the battle.

According to my sources, if Shuyin does seven cutsequences (I never saw one) you will lose the battle automatically and get the bad ending. They say this takes about 80 turns. You'd have to be healing constantly or really weak to actually see it that way.
