I no longer feel safe...

Postby beau99 » Thu Sep 18, 2008 8:33 pm

I'm extremely lucky that I didn't go out for my usual late-night convenience store walk a night ago.

Around 11:30 PM, two guys got carjacked by someone they knew and were shot. One of them was killed instantly, and the other is in the hospital in critical condition.

The signficance of this is that it happened at my apartment complex. I could go all day about how much of a dump this place is, yet I never thought something like this could happen so close to me. I'm supposedly in Phoenix's safest neighborhood. I guess 'safe' doesn't mean what it used to.

Yeah that's like my school. I always thought it was pretty safe, yet in the first 2 weeks of school there were 2 sexual assault cases. The entire 2 years before the only bad thing that really happened was a girl died from getting hit by a car, and then a group of kids beat someone up with baseball bats (which technically wasn't on campus).
It's weird realizing how safe the world really isn't.

That, my friends, depends on your definition of 'safe'. Sin is everywhere, even the church (sadly enough). You can try to take every concievable precaution known to mankind and you still won't be completely safe. The only true safety is in Jesus Christ. Though, I must ask this out of curiosity, what kept you from your evening stroll?
I will pray for the families. Enya.

That's too bad. But look at it this way, beau99. Your being scared may be useful in helping you be more careful. You might be prompted to take extra steps for your safety, and then you WILL be safe. Or safer. Maybe even get a gun or something if the place you're living in is a dump? That may save your life in the future.

Hope that helps.

Another thing you can think about was that the reason you probably didnt have any money was because God already knew that this incident was going to happen, therefore he protected you! Praised be God that you are safe and I pray for the man that was shot and the shooter to come to know Christ!
God bless you and may God protect you now and always!

Sorry... I really, really despise guns... and to be honest, I don't think I could trust myself with one.

Despise guns? Well... you have to do SOMETHING. If not getting a gun, then maybe train someplace to defend yourself. Learn a martial art or something. I mean, you can pray this won't happen again, but you can't disconnect that from your taking steps of your own. If you do nothing and end up getting hurt or killed, you'll have yourself to blame.

Do not turn this into an anti-gun thread. Take that crap somewhere else.

It was buried under pages of thread. It's understandable. All kidding aside, I don't care what point you felt you were stating or making, leave the gun chat out.

Feel free to lock the thread, then. It's not my fault somebody else brought up the subject.

Other people on other forums have given me enough support, anyway.

Honestly if you just are intelligent not to do stupid things, like walk around at 3 am, then you'll be okay. I'm a girl, and at my school there's always a threat of being attacked. But I just don't walk alone at night, or I don't go out past 9:30. I also stay in well lit areas, and away from the creepy trails that go through the woods. I also carry pepper spray.
There's no need for weapons and all that.

beau,

learning martial arts is a great step...also if you can make sure you walk with someone if going out late then that will usually deter an attacker *smile hope you feel better

No matter where you go, so long as there are people around, a few to some of these people will be doing stupid, dangerous, or criminal things. Best thing to do is to pray and use common sense (as has already been mentioned).

Martial arts and pepper spray couldn't hurt either, but these have already been mentioned too. *nods*
