Frustrating situation

Postby Sheenar » Tue Jan 15, 2008 4:28 pm

Right now I am kind of freaking out. I am having ankle surgery on Monday --to get my Achilles tendon lengthened. I thought there'd be, at most, a week of recovery and then I'd be able to walk.
But I just talked to my surgeon this afternoon (I was calling because he had told me nothing about the surgery and the surgery center people had no info about it either --no post-op instructions, no time estimate of recovery, etc.) and he said I won't be able to put weight on my foot for 6 weeks. We talked about my options: either crutches or a walker. I told him I could use a walker, but I wouldn't be able to hold my leg off the ground while walking with it.
The surgery center doesn't have any wheelchairs for me to use. I would need an electric one because it would not be safe to use a manual chair on my campus with all its hills and steepness.
So now I am faced with trying to figure out how to make this work. I can't miss 6 weeks of class --I'll be dropped from the university if I do. If I'm dropped, I won't have anywhere to live as I live in the dorm. I need to find a way to get to my classes while I recover from surgery. I looked up places where you can rent power wheelchairs, but it'll cost over $600 to use one for 6 weeks. I just don't have that.
I don't know what to do. Does anyone have any ideas?

One of my friends suggested that I get notes from my surgeon (1/prof) and take them to my profs and explain my situation --how I didn't find out until now about not being able to walk for 6 weeks, etc. and see if I could possibly do my assignments from my dorm during those 6 weeks. I'll try to get a ride and go get those notes tomorrow.

Also, how do I take Pebbles out to do her business while I'm recovering? --probably for at least a day or two after surgery, I won't be able to leave my dorm.

Please help. Please pray for this situation. It is stressing the heck out of me!

Why the glaring misinformation? Who told you it would be a short recovery? What about physical therapy? Could you find a medical supply store willing to help you find a chair to rent?

Praying for you.

Update:
I think we can possibly work something out. My plan of action is to try to use the walker the week after my surgery (after I get the hard cast put on) to get to classes, taking frequent rest breaks. I'm going to talk to my profs starting tomorrow and tell them my situation and how I'm not having a lot of room to make arrangements, how I plan to be in class if possible, and if there's any work I can do in the dorm to save the trip to campus. That way I know which classes I have to go to the physical location for and which I can do the work for at the dorm.
I just got off the phone with a family from my church. The wife will take me to my surgery on Monday and I'll stay with them at their house for the first 24 hours. The husband said he would make sure that I got to classes and where I needed to go and that it would just take some organization.
So the puzzle pieces are slowly coming together. Still stressful as heck, though.

Another update:
I found a wheelchair to use! I called my church and they said I can borrow one! So everything's coming together now. My advisor will probably rearrange/switch out some of my classes so I'll be on the main part of campus. One of my classes is currently off campus at the ag center, so that will help a lot.
My disabilities counselor called Student Activities and we are trying to work out some volunteers to help push me around to my classes and to work (I work on campus).

I'll be sure to keep everyone update. Thank you for praying.
