Harry Potter, Dungeons and Dragons, and Pokemon

Postby CrimsonRyu17 » Thu Mar 02, 2006 5:34 pm

okay, for Mods, I'm not sure where to put this so sorry if I put it in the wrong spot.

okay, I need help and info. you see, my mom once watched this show (I'm not sure what it was called) that told her that Pokemon, Dungeons & Dragons, and Harry Potter is evil. it even said that the the author of Harry Potter practices real witchcraft.
I've never read or seen Harry Potter nor have I played Dungeons and Dragons, but, I don't know if what those people said was true or not. I'm not judging anyone but I want to know the truth about this. I know that Pok'emon is not evil, but what about the other two? I mean, maybe a few links would help but I just need some proof to assure my mom that those three things are not truely evil if they are not evil. and if you can, please give me info on how it is evil if it is evil, or if it isn't evil tell me how it is not evil in a christian perspective. I'm some what confused. I just need a little help and prayer for me and my mom. we've been argueing back and forth over this issue and it's really starting to get annoying and stressful. thanks and God bless.

Let's hope people can keep it civil. I already PMd you an article written by Steve Racer of Fans For Christ explaining why D&D is not evil and not anti-Christian. As for Harry Potter, it's in the same vein as D&D. Fantasy magic that is impossible to perform in real life.

An excellent site to peruse is fansforchrist.org, which I mentioned before. Also, Crimmy, I started a thread about this same subject in the gaming forum, and Chosen Raven gave me a link to a site. After I post this I'll come back and edit it in so you can see it as well.

To sum it up, no, D&D and Harry Potter are not evil. You are not any less of a Christian for enjoying them. However, keep in mind that you are to honor your parents so long as you live under their roof. If they say you can't play/watch them, then respect their wishes until you move out on your own.

EDIT: Here is the link to the article. http://www.mjyoung.net/dungeon/confess.html

Good article.

I myself was a roleplayer for many years, and never gave it much thought. In my early 20's, I had a religious conversion. One member of a pentacostal group told me that this was an evil thing, and I needed to renounce it. Well, I wanted to do what God wanted so I renounced it.

Later I found from studying theology, that these claims seemed to be utterly false, but since I had made a vow, I was bound. It was something I kind of resented. Years later, I got up the courage to talk to my parish priest about it (I tend to be uncomfortable talking to anyone). He asked me several questions of the nature of my "vow", and told me it was not valid because it was based on false information. He told me that these games can be harmful when they are taken too seriously so the players neglect family and God or if the player cannot discern between game and reality, but is certainly not harmful if approached with a balanced approach.

I have taken up gaming again free of guilt.

The key, I think, is to know yourself (kind of going off of what AnimeHeretic was saying). When I was younger I became severally immersed in fantasy. It appealed to me so much that I actually went wiccan for about a year when I was about 14 or 15. However, I know people who can pull it off who do just fine in their spiritual life. It just takes discernment. You have to ask the Lord what He wants you to do.

Exactly. Some people are capable of watching an anime with lots of fanservice and not lust. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them, and therefore tend to steer away from anime with that content. It's just not worth the risk. If reading Harry Potter or playing D&D makes you interested in the occult, then it is to be avoided for you just as fanservice is to be avoided for me. However, since burning orcs with a fireball in a game does not make me interested in witchcraft whatsoever, then I see nothing wrong with it.

Believe it or not, I used to be a Harry Potter fan, as well as a PKMN fan.
I'm not anymore.
Those things are of the Devil ( yes, I cconfess it eventhough I may get in trouble for it )
Pokemon would be all good if they didn't have psychic, Dark,Ghost etc... types or evolutionary stones.
Yes, the writer of Harry Potter, JK Rowling, practices real witchcraft, she's a Wiccan.
And Harry Potter is used often as a 'evangelizing' tool for people who practice Witchcraft. Witchcraft does work ( I used to be into it ), but it is not of us but the Devil, Demons carry out the jobs, obvously.
Dungeons and Dragons has Witchcraft in it, and it is common for people to get 'sucked in' to it, and try these things: " cool, power."
I don't know about you, but I don't want to support something that spreads Witchcraft ( the Devil's power )...
and I don't want to swallow rat poison for my spirit...
I'm praying alright

Thank you for proving me wrong Ryupower. For a few minutes, I thought...wow, a thread on CAA this edgy that members are being respectful towards each other. But no, we got a spoon-fed propaganda post. And it spoils the whole thread. Further dicussion can be taken to PM.
